Format the player to FAT32. I suggest guiformat.exe (http://www.ridgecrop.demon.co.uk/index.htm?guiformat.htm)  and do a firmware upgrade.

Thanks to wayback machine you still can download the X5 Firmware 2.10E (https://web.archive.org/web/20170914233047/http://cowonrussia.ru/files/drivers/x5_fw(2.10E).zip)

Did you follow the update procedure? As far as I remember you need to put the x5_fw.bin into a folder named FIRMWARE not into root. Did you use Rockbox utility to install? Does the Cowon Firmware work?
Check the filesytem for errors.
