Title: Ipod 5G 30gig 1.2 firmware not found!
Post by: BronYAurStomp on October 03, 2006, 05:54:12 PM
My ipod (the one in the title), not a 5.5g (although I got it two days ago), can't be found by either ipodpatcher or the unofficial Rockbox Installer.
It shows up as drive E: on My Computer, and iTunes recognizes it as well (and it's enabled for disk use).  It has 1.2 firmware.  What's going wrong? I installed rockbox on my ipod mini 1st gen using this computer as well.

The 5.5g is not yet supported by Rockbox.

You can get details about progress for that platform in this thread:  http://forums.rockbox.org/index.php?topic=6475.0

I believe the 1.2 firmware doesn't use the sysinfo file (or whatever it's called) so many iPod utilities won't recognize it since that was used as a quick way to identify hardware as an iPod.

I did the SysInfo thing but it's still not recognized as an iPod :*(

What number N is it at for iPodPatcher?
Title: Re: Ipod 5G 30gig 1.2 firmware not found!

It's not being recognized at all, either by RIX (sry RIX is the 3rd party Rockbox Installer X v1, i know you guys don't support it just throwing it in there just in case it means something to someone) or ipodpatcher.
ipodpatcher says:
(for ipodpatcher 0) Drive is not an iPod, aborting
(for ipodpatcher 1) Error reading from disk: The parameter is incorrect.
(for ipodpatcher 2-30) Error opening disk: The system cannot find the file specified.

*3rd edit: and i'm really really really grateful for the quick responses i've been getting, thank you Llorean

I have no idea what "RIX" is.

But, I notice you didn't answer my question. What numbers have you tried with iPodPatcher?

What parameters are you giving iPodPatcher?

Are you just doing "ipodpatcher 1"?

Also, please do not edit posts to answer questions. It makes it nearly impossible to know you've responded if you go back and edit the post above the question.

That's correct, nothing outside of what the installation guide says.

I'm not sure I can really help you with this one.. I've been told that "Error reading from disk: The parameter is incorrect." is the message that the windows read() function returns to the program when it tries to use it.

Ok. I guess I'll just sit tight and hope for an update that will fix things for me. I'm still a little confused as to what exactly I did/didn't do to cause the problem, but thanks for your help. I'll try looking more into 'Error reading from disk: The parameter is incorrect'.

to fix rockbox  on the 5G with firmware 1.2  just repatch the bootloader, (with iPodlinux you have to go into linux(live CD or otherwise) and redefine the partition table) the Apple installer overwrites it as FAT32
to which mrmagic526 says

Yes that's all you need to do is extract the new firmware patch it and then reload it and it works

Unfortunately I don't know what it means to 'repatch the bootloader'. Could someone  enlighten me on that?

Sorry about that.  I misread your original post.

I've got the same problem.  Apparently the 5g's running 1.2 Firmware have a problem being detected by ipodpatcher, which si where you get that "Parameter is incorrect" error.  I get it too only when using ipodpatcher 1, and I've tried 0-30.  0 is my main hard drive, 1 is the ipod.

 There's a fix to this posted in another forum, but from what i've been told, Rockbox will have to be adapted to the 2048bit sector size in the new firmware.  (If I'm wrong someone, please correct me... I'm still somewhat new to this =)

If there's anything I can do to help, feel free to message me.  I've got a new 5g with the 1.2 FW installed, and i'm desperate to get away from iTunes.

And how do you just "repatch the bootloader" so that you can get it to work on a 5g with 1.2 as listed below?

If you have a new model 5g (what some have been calling the 5.5g), it is not yet supported by Rockbox.  The first generation 5g should work fine with firmware 1.2.

Well, according to the apple website, mine doesnt have the right serial number to be a 5.5g.  However, I'm starting to suspect they havent listed all the serial numbers.  I've been chatting with people on #rockbox for two days, and we can't get it working.  Somehow I got the 2048 bit sectors like the 5.5g.  Not sure if its because I have a 5.5g or if the restore I did after screwing it up re-did the sectors or what...

Yeah, either the restore reformats 5Gs to the 2048 sector format, or their list of 5.5G serial numbers is somewhat off, but it is apparently possible to have an iPod that does not show up in their serial number range, that is impossible (at the moment) to install Rockbox on.

Call up Apple to check. It's really the easiest way.

If it's a new 30 gig instead of the older model then you're out of luck.  If it's an old model that's been flashed to the 1.2 firmware you can basically follow the directions for flashing firmware on the Ipod Linux forums.

http://ipodlinux.org/forums/viewtopic.php?t=7748

That's how to download and flash the firmware and reupload it to the ipod.....  It's a better bootloader than rockbox's in my opinion.

So I think i'm going to read the instructions and see what this is all about.

Still doesn't work for me :/

When I use ipodpatcher, I get:

[INFO] Reading partition table from \\.\PhysicalDrive3
 Error reading from disk: The parameter is incorrect.

This is definitely my ipod, because all other numbers (I've tried up to 30) either say there isn't a disk there, or say it isn't an ipod.

I've just tried multiple restores of my 5g to v1.2 of Apple's firmware using iTunes 7.0.1, and it still has the normal 512 byte sectors.

So it seems that either Apple shipped some "old" 5gs with 2048 byte sectors, or their list of "Late 2006" (aka 5.5g) serial numbers is incomplete.  The list is on this page:

A quick and easy way to check if you have a 5.5G is to look and see if you have the search feature. Apple only enabled it on the 5.5gs, so if you have one of them, you'll have the search. If you don't, its a plane jane 5G.

Intersting.  I -do- in fact have the search feature, but my serial number ends in "V9M".

Are you sure search wasnt added with the 1.2 firmware?

Do you have the search feature under music now after doing a restore of your 5g?  I want to find out of thats a sure fire way to see if you have a 5.5g, or if it shows up after upgrading a 5g to 1.2 firmware.

My serial number ends in V9M as well, and I have search.

From what I've been able to get from google/various sites ONLY the 5.5g ipods have search feature.  The 'older' 5gs do not have this, so apparently Apple gave us some super secret 5.5gs disguised as 5gs. :*( hooray.

Feature-wise, the new 5.5G iPods offer the following differences from the 5G iPods that debuted last year:

    * 60 percent brighter screens
    * Search
    * Significantly longer battery life during video playback
    * Quick Scroll — a new feature that shows the current letter of the alphabet in a heads-up display while scrolling through a list
    * Gapless playback
    * New video games
    * 640 × 480 video playback
...
The first two features, the brighter screen and the search feature, are only available on the 5.5G iPods. The remaining features are enabled for all 5G iPods updated with the latest firmware (version 1.2)

He says there's actually a THIRD 5th gen ipod that has not been officially released by Apple, presumably the ones we got.

*Edit* CNET and Apple's iPod 'Discussion' Forums confirms that there is indeed an "enhanced" 5G...so we apparently have a model not recognized by Apple..........i can't find how i can talk to Apple directly either :( either their website is an evasive mess or i need to go to bed.
