Hi. I hope people are still tinkering with these music players. I had a precious H340 that I upgraded and it was recently stolen. Now I'm trying to upgrade an old iHP-120. I've installed a Samsung MZMP256HBGJ that I bought off fleabay. It's a 256 GB msata drive. I've got the recommended msata to zif and zif to ide adapters (zender no longer available so used one like <a href="https://www.ebay.com/itm/Mini-1-8-40pin-ZIF-HDD-SSD-Port-to-CF-50pin-adapter-Plug-for-Toshiba/113182199066?hash=item1a5a2f4d1a">this</a>. I formatted it as a FAT32 disk using EaseUS. I've installed bootloader 7pre4 but did not flash rom or ram (a little scared to try that). Now that I've got it buttoned up it's not exactly working right. If I try to start it up it will give me the ATA -11 error and fail to load requiring a hard reset. The original Iriver firmware (US 1.66) does not work either (says check HDD) but I expected that for this drive size. If I plug it into my PC with the USB cable and start it up it will load perfectly fine into "Bootloader USB mode" and I can use it as a hard drive as normal. Only after unplugging while in this mode will Rockbox load and work as it should. This is a one time thing though and will require this everytime I power it down. Has anyone seen this before and are there any known fixes? Any help is greatly appreciated.

I have no clue about the iRiver, so I'm just idly speculating, probably uselessly. I just remember that not all ssds would work with ipod conversions.
What happens if you boot it up while it's connected to a source of power other than the PC?
Just wondering whether it's anything to do with the power the ssd requires at start-up, so it can get going when connected to usb simply because it can draw more power from it?
Seems as if the original 1.8" hard drive draws significantly less power than that ssd, according to the figures I've seen.
Can't find anything on whether ssds draw additional power on starting up. There's no spin-up I guess, but I bet there's still some extra power draw for something?
As I say, just speculating, might be barking up the wrong tree, but maybe the ssd can't get enough power from the battery to get going?

Okay finally got back home to try your suggestion. It seems that my problem is not related to the power source. I connected it with the wall charger, powered it up and it still gave me the ATA -11 error. For some reason the bootloader is not working unless I have it first plugged into the USB of my PC. It seems like this should be something that can be fixed but I have no clue what to try at this point.

Took a chance on flashing the ROM and RAM. It unfortunately didn't help but at least I didn't brick my player. With that done I'm still getting the ATA -11 error at start up and it now also says no partition. The new boot screen gives me debug information though I have no idea how to interpret the data (Any devs think it would be useful to see?). As before it works perfectly fine if and only if I start it up plugged into the USB of my PC (Bootloader USB mode) and then unplug from that mode. Because that seems to always work I don't think it's any kind of connection issue with the adapters or daughter board. Hoping someone can help. Maybe this drive is just not compatible and I need one of the confirmed to work Samsung EVO 840s.

Yet another update. I reduced my partition size to 120 GB. It works and boots up properly. If I try to expand the partition to the full 256 GB it gives me the ATA -11 error. Well I guess I only paid $40 for the drive. 120 GB is still better than what I had before. If anyone has any ideas though, I would love to utilize the full 256 GB available on this drive.

I guess the Rockbox forums aren't as active as they once were. Anyway I think I got my full 256 GB working. I ended up reformatting my disk and starting over from scratch. Instead of replacing my original backed up Rockbox firmware/files, I used the Rockbox utility to do a fresh installation of Rockbox 3.14. After that I checked to see if it would boot. To my surprise it seems to have worked. I've moved about 50 GB of music to it and no problems yet. There must be some issue with using a backup of the original drive and then expanding the partition size.

Sadly after thinking everything was working properly I'm having issues again. With this setup it worked for a few days though rockbox was a bit unstable and would freeze up randomly requiring a reset which resulted in the ata 11 error on reboot which would only clear by connecting to my PC by USB and starting in USB bootloader mode. Now it seems that the issue has become worse requiring this start up procedure on every boot. Maybe things become corrupted on repeated crashes. Even after reformatting and reinstalling everything from scratch it no longer boots properly. My SSD still works fine and can be seen normally when connected to a PC. The original hdd also works perfectly fine and boots into rockbox without issue. I'm just lost and ready to give up on this mod. Maybe I'll try to get my hands on a known compatible CF card and go that route instead.
