Someone (another iPod modder) told me that it was possible to get my 5.5.gen 30gig ipod to record stuff by installing rockbox. At the time i had no idea what rockbox was so i got to lookin for it around the net. i found this place and seen it had a recording forum, so yea now i beleive him. im a complete noob to Rockbox but have sucsessfully installed the rockbox firmware.....
My question is where to go from here for recording....any help and input would be much appreciated...

Have you read the manual?
-
1) Please don't put everything in bold.
2) Rockbox runs on many players, some of which have recording, some don't. I'm not sure whether the iPod video does or not. An iPod guru will be able to tell us.

The iPod video does have recording - you need an adaptor to plug in to the dock connector which is where the line-in on the iPod is.
-
Recording on PP targets (thus also on the Ipod Video) is considered experimental and not suited for serious use.
-
couldnt you use the headphone jack? i remember somebody saying something like this once. maybe as a joke?
-
No you can't use the headphone jack on the 5G/5.5G. I'm not certain on other generations.
-
iPodLinux's wiki says (http://www.ipodlinux.org/Recording):
Using the latest nightlies, 3G, 4G, Photo, and Color iPods are able to use Mic recording and only 3G iPods are able to use Line In recording.
This suggests that recording through the headphone jack is possible on these particular units -- i.e. that the hardware can support it.

ok that must of been where i got that info from. i remember before the rockbox port on the 80 gig i was going back and forth looking for info on how the port was going. my new question is, Can you use one of these to record from the ipod ?

Thanks

No. Line-out ≠line-in.
-
alright thanks. is there something like this i can buy somewhere that has a line in?
-
You mean a player that has line-in? I guess iRiver h320/h340 and h120/h140 are the best recording targets, the latter even have optical in/out.
They surface from time to time on ebay & the like
-
no i ment a device like the one i linked to before.
-
oh you mean a cable?
-
I have seen them before -- but I recall they were a bit on the pricey side. Some clever googling can probably turn some up.
