Title: Use an external hdd as additional storage
Post by: jfive on July 30, 2008, 02:21:59 PM
I got an idea but i have no clou if this could work because i'm not into programming and stuff. so i got this sansa e260 with 6 gb flash memory. unfortunately my mp3 collection is a little bit bigger than 6gb...i know there is a slot for mini sd cards but i would favor an external hdd as addional storage connected with my sansa via usb2. any ideas or solutions? thank you in advance

This idea has come up a lot of times, there are two obstacles.
1) the hardware needs to support it and AFAIK this is not certain on sansas.
2) if rockbox is going to support it we need a software USB host stack to pull this off on pp based devices (of which the sansa is one) and this is a mayor thing to implement, keep in mind that the USB device stack is still not functional

And I would Like to roll in the quick note that well, yes, the specs for the sansa c/e200s does include a USB:OTG capable hardware driver, it will ONLY support 1.1 specs in "host mode"

Where did you find that info?

I toyed around with the idea of a hardware hack to the E200 series, to bring the microSDHC contacts out to a full sized SDHC socket that could possibly be mounted in the battery compartment.  That would let you put in a 32GB SDHC card instead of being limited to (currently) 8GB with MicroSDHC.  You'd have to strap the battery to the outside of the player if the new socket were in the old battery compartment, but I hear that duct tape is in style these days... :)

There are already 16GB MicroSDHC cards out there, and have been for a number of months.

According to that link that card is on pre-order with stock expected end of September.
Anyway I want a 32Gb card next year perhaps.
