Title: Slow database rebuild on Gigabeat F-30
Post by: ribbie on June 18, 2009, 09:38:29 PM
This problem has only shown up in the last few days.  I can't get my F-30 to complete a rebuild on the database.  It builds very rapidly at first and then slows down to a crawl, (one or two entries per minute for hours and never completes the update).  I have waited up to 36 hours and it never finishes.
Any ideas on the subject?

Someone else mentioned this the other day to me.  How many songs in does it get before it begins to slow substantially?

It reaches about 22000 songs before it really starts to drag.  I have about 37 gb of music on it right now.

I'm well impressed you've managed to get 37GB of music onto a 30GB player. That's awesome.

The last time I saw this problem there were some corrupt files in the Database, run ChkDisk or file checking utility and also check for any 0 byte files.

It was really hard getting all that data on a 30 gb player- I had to plug the earphone jack  to keep the data from from spilling out.  ;)  Actually, I remembered the capacity incorrectly- it is a 40gb player.  I have done two things that seemed to have corrected the problem.  I upgraded the build to v3.3 and went through the album folders and deleted tons of old desktop.ini files and album cover jpegs that I accidentally transported to the Gigabeat when loaded it.

I am thinking to reloading the files (I have done an extensive reedit of the ID3 tags).  As of now they are listed by album on my PC.  Should I load them into the "album" folder in Rockbox or in the "music" folder.  What is the difference?

BTW, Rockbox is an AWESOME utility that has made a good player into an outstanding one. THANKS!  ;D

Apparently this is do to a problem in storing a large number of files in the database:

I am so proud that my stupidity has been immortalized.  BTW, you are not the first to do so. ;D

I reloaded my ID3 corrected album files into the Rockbox "music" files folder and everything seems to be working well. Is there any difference in placing the album folders under "music" or "albums" in Rockbox?

Rockbox has no folders that it considers important beyond it's own installation folder ".rockbox". You can put music wherever you like. You could create a folder called "CompleteNonsense" for example, load it up with your music, and Rockbox would happily play it from there.

"Music" is the only Folder name that I wouldn't use.  If you boot into the OF a folder named Music will be hidden.

That might be true for some targets (e.g. Sansas) but I'm not sure it applies to the Gigabeat F-30.

It definitely doesn't apply to the Gigabeat at all.

As a finisher, thanks to y'all nice people who worked on this - awesome program, good documentation and easy to use. One of the best open-source projects I've used :P

cruise, I'd personally prefer if you post the solution instead of editing out the problem, because it may help someone else.
