Title: Utility crashes when configuring
Post by: greene8097 on September 10, 2012, 01:20:41 PM
I am a blind man, trying to put rockbox on my sansa clip plys players. I downloaded the Utility, unzipped ti, and opened it. As expected, the configuration dialog opened, but when I tried to click Autodetect, the Utility immediately crashed. I tried making other selections, just to see what happened, but the Utility crashes each time. I get a Windows error message as follows:

Please, as I said, I am BLIND, so it is not so easy for me to navigate around forums. If this has already been addressed, I apologize. If you can, be as specific as you can in your reply.

Thanks,

This is not a known issue. I don't see a reason why it should crash on autodetection, but obviously something is wrong here. I'll try to give it a look the next couple of days -- autodetection is known to need some work. Unfortunately I cannot reproduce your setup since I don't own a Clip+.

Can you use Rockbox Utility if you don't use the autodetection feature? You need to select the drive letter of your player and the player type from the two lists above.

Also, what version of Windows are you using? Windows 7? Are you using a 64bit version of Windows?

Cannot reproduce on Windows 7 x64 with Rockbox Utility 1.3.0.
Tried both MSC and MTP USB modes, autodetection works fine.
V01.02.16P firmware with 8gb uSD card inserted.
All tests done in original firmware.

Well, first, I tried using a manual selection, but when I selected, Find your player, or whatever the language is, once again, it immediately shuts down with the Windows error message.  Here is a question: in order to maximize both what vision I have left, as well as the text reader I use, I have a more unusual screen configuration. I have white text on a black background, and I use Windows High Contrast Black as my default appearance. Could this have an effect on the Utility? I have Windows 7, 64-bit. I tried Utility both with my sansa already conected, and with it not yet connected, as a test, but the Utility crashes either way. I wan to explain, it doesn't work for a period of time, and then crash; it IMMEDIATELY stops working, and I get the windows error message I already copied here.

Patiently waiting,
Doug

Unfortunately I'm pretty much out of ideas here -- it should work at least if you don't use autodetection and select your player manually. I also don't see a reason how different visual settings could cause this.

Can you try on a different PC?

Well, I tried just that, on my son's laptop, and we seemed to be making progress. The program did NOT crash, but suddenly, I got a message indicating that I needed to download the original firmware.  This amazes me, because I have been using this MP3 player, and I don't understand why it would have any firmware other than the original! Unfortunately, I don't know what to do next, so again, I am stumped. Wow, I thought this would be really easy.

I'm guessing you can't actually read the entire message with your screen reader, since it provides a link to the file you need and explains that its needed for patching.   If you can't get it to work with your software, here is a direct link to the file:

We have to patch the original firmware to install Rockbox.  We can't do this in-situ, so it needs a copy of the original firmware.  We can't distribute that as it isn't ours, it is Sandisk's, so you need to download a copy of it for us to patch.  You then "update" using the original firmware.  As saratoga says, it seems unfortunately your screen reader doesn't read the entire message.

Thanks for all your attempts to help, but I give up. Four times on two different computers, the TRockbox Utility tells me that everything installed correctly, in the Log. Yet, when I reboot the mp3, nothing has change,d, and I can find no evidence of any Rockbox files on the mp3 player. Evidently this is a mor complicated installation than I can  handle. NO hard feelings, but I can't stand the aggravation anymore.

This sounds like you installed Rockbox on the wrong device. Since installation is mostly copying a couple of files (bootloader installation depends on the player and might involve more stuff to do, but in your case it ends up copying a file and requiring you to perform a firmware upgrade of the player which does the important remaining work) this is a rather common error.

In case you want to try it again I suggest checking the drive letter selected in the "Select your player in the filesystem" dropdown list and, in case installation still isn't working as expected, save the system trace by navigation to the menu entry Help / Troubleshoot / System Trace and attach its output to your question. Unfortunately there are things a human can determine rather quickly by looking at the trace but a program has problems doing so.

Of course it's up to you if you finally gave up now and don't want to try again.

Ill be damned! IT WORKED!  Thanks so much for your patience with me.  Now that Rockbox is installed, I can take my time and read the manual to learn all the features.  I really wanted my MP3 to speak to me, so now I have that.
