Title: Any way to dump original H3xx EEPROM?
Post by: JimDandy on October 28, 2006, 10:48:20 AM
Hello. Sorry if this is answered already, but I haven't satisfied my curiosity yet. Is there any way to dump the entire contents of the EEPROM from an iRiver H3xx (I have a 320) in a way that it could be flashed back at a later time with DRM intact? I see that there are EEPROM dumping and restoration options being developed for the H1xx series with the new flash firmware. I figure the limitation that makes it so that the H3xx need to be flashed with intl firmware before rockboxing means the answer is no, but I thought I'd just ask. TIA.

The EEPROM is a chip where the of stores settings and is not the same as the flash chip. Dumping of both chips contents works afaik from the debug menu on an h300, but you would have to be running rockbox to do so and the EEPROM can be reprogrammed from rockbox but not the flash (yet). I don't know if anyone investigated the DRM closely on h300 but the fact that flashing of a patched firmware from the us firmware doesnt write the complete image to flash suggests that the decryption key lives there. How to dump the flash without installing rockbox I do not know but I imagine it would take some pretty serious hardware skills.

Thanks, nls. So, if I understand you correctly (which I might not), you are explaining why Rockbox  has to be loaded after the player is loaded with an international firmware - because the US firmware keeps the DRM-containing portion of the flash (or the entire flash?) protected. Well, I don't have the skills to do anything, but I guess I was also wondering whether this capability was at all on the horizon - if anyone's working on it. I'm so tempted to rockbox this player, but I know I can't go back afterwards. Using rockbox on my H120, I'd forgotten how limited iRiver firmware is.
