Title: <Untagged> i need help
Post by: ID 357 on November 08, 2006, 05:51:52 PM
ok so i got the daily build on november 7th for my ipod video 5g, and its pretty cool cuz ive never tried rockbox or anything like it b4 but i have a major problem, which is i have alot of my songs are untagged, even tho its not like that in my itunes or on the apple firmware, then i read that itunes sets the tags only for the ipod and not on the actual file, i dunno if its true but i checked it out with one of my untagged songs and it seems to be, but the thing is i dont have room for any music on my computer, its all on the ipod so i need a way that i can get say itunes to put the tags on the file or another way to do it, also most of the tags are id3v2.2 and theyre all mp3's, i might have a wav or 2 but i doubt it, also my playback pauses for a second like 20 seperate times during a song and i dont kno wuts with that.

so i'm trying to understand your question, but it's basically all one long sentence and I can't work out what you're talking about.

I see you can play music with rockbox already.  What format are the files?

did you try running tagcache to read all of your files for the id3 tags?  maybe, you should try that.  that might answer your "dunno if its true" question.

did you read the manual yet?  it's a very good manual?
did you search the forum for problems similar to yours?  it's a very comprehensive forum.

as for playback pausing, i dont kno wuts with that either.  sorry i couldn't help.  maybe, you could tell us more about what codec you are using, what kind of WPS you are using, what EQ settings you are using.  Unfortunately, from here, I can't see what rockbox settings you are using or what audio formats you are using, and there's no point me trying to guess either.

ok half the stuff u asked was in my post but wtv, my files are mp3's, yes i did the tagcache and it doesnt help, it got all my music on there from my itunes database but it didnt use the itunes ID3 tags and thats my problem.

itunes has its own ID3 tags for the files instead of actually using or writing ID3 tags for the files, eg. in itunes my song has wut album its from wut track, etc. but if i went to that song in windows explorer and when it its properties all of that would be blank.

i understand i was overloading the cpu and thats why it was skipping so forget that part

i need a way to have rockbox use the ID3 tags that itunes use instead of the ID3 tags that windows uses. i hope thats clear enough, i dont see how i could make it more clear now.

and yes i checked the manual, no help, i checked the forums, no help thats why im posting

Ok, first things first - Read the Forum Posting Guidelines and type in only complete sentences using real, full, words and halfway proper punctuation.  This is the rule.  This is not an arbitrary rule, there are many people who read these forums who don't speak English natively, and more blind people that you probably expect who have these forums read to them.

I am no expert on the iTunes database, and was acualy unaware you could even build the iTunes database (through iTunes) with untagged MP3s.
IF iTunes is building its database from MP3s without tags, it must be using the song's filename. (?)  So I assume your MP3 files are named halfway decently.  Running with that assumption I would suggest one of two courses of action.

Rereading your first post again I see now that you "tagged" many songs from within iTunes while they were on your iPod, and you don't have room on your computer to remove them, tag them again (properly) and then re add them to the iPod.
The more I reread your original post the more I think this might be a good question for an Apple/iTunes forum.  The question being "I thought I had tagged songs with iTunes and now I find I had only updated the iTunes database, is there any way to write the iTunes database to the mp3's ID3 tags?"

1 - The best-in-the-longterm solution is to download a good MP3 ID3 tagger (I use Tag&Rename, MP3TS is also good) and properly tag your files based upon their filename.  This is not hard, you can do it in batch, and will save yourself many headaches in the future.

2 - The easy-in-the-shorterm solution is to play with the UNOFFICIAL tool discussed here:
 http://www.rockbox.org/twiki/bin/view/Main/ConvertiTunesDBtoTagCache
The problems with this method:
A - You will need to rerun this program every time you add new music through iTunes.
B - There is no support available for the program here.
C - i don't even know if it works.  (Maybe someone who does know could chime in)

Edit #4:
3 - I just thought of another solution, but it depends on what percentage of your iPod is free space.

Please read our forum posting guidelines. We ask that you use whole words, not things like "wtv".

well i dont think it worked. i installed it as instructed and turned on my ipod and went to artists and it looked how it should (no untagged, everything there) then i tried to choose an artist and it said the tag cache wasnt ready.
then going back to the main screen it wouldnt even let me go into artists again, it would just say it wasnt ready. i restarted the ipod and that made no change, it wouldnt update so i initalized the cache and it just un did wut the prog had done. so i guess the prog doesnt work but it seems like it just needs  a bit more work and it could be useful.

I sent you a PM explaining that the language you were using was unacceptable for these forums.

Odd enough it seemed to have worked. Although it said the tagcache wasnt ready i guess it was actually updating it or something because i went to use my ipod about a half hour later and it was "ready" and working, organized like my apple firmware.. this prog needs more attention, it could be a very good thing

This happened to me but the command line tool did not work. What i did was go into itunes, select all tracks and hit right click/convert id 3 tags and then selected version 2.4 and it worked just fine.
