Title: rockboy for b&w 4th gen iPod
Post by: longboarder on November 11, 2016, 06:56:49 PM
So I used to have the iPod classic 6th gen with emcore and rockbox which allowed me to play gameboy games with their gameboy emulator but then it broke (and this was like back in 2013)  now I have a older generation classic, specifically a 4th gen b&w.  I do wanna dual boot iPod linux and rockbox in order to play gameboy games and still be able to play flac music files but as I haven't found any manuals on how to dual boot both and I really don't wanna risk ruining another iPod so thats why I came here to ask about a the rockboy plugin.  Has rockbox made a version of rockboy for the 4th gen b&w no matter even if its in alpha or ported by a 3rd party user I'll take it.  If not could someone explain in laymans or step-by-step how to dual boot the two softwares?  Thanks and regards,
Thomas Hancock

Looking at the source, it doesn't look like rockboy is ported to the grayscale 4G, only the color model.

I wouldn't worry about installing third party software on your ipod.  No matter how badly you screw it up, iTunes can just restore the player.

The Rockbox bootloader for the (non-Classic 6G) iPods will boot IPL's linux.bin from disk if Play/Pause is held during boot.

I guess what I want to do is that I wanna uninstall the rockbox loader, then install iloader in place of rockbox's.  Then once the loader is installed I need to find a way to add rockbox to the loader as well so I can dual boot ipod linux, rockbox, and the default os

I can't remember if this is still possible or not, but its definitely not what you want to do.  As [Saint] suggests, the stock rockbox bootloader can load all 3 firmwares, and is the only up to date bootloader for the old ipods.

Okay well I got the bootloader to realize the other os but now I need to find a way to install a stable version so then I dont get a corrupt kernel when I try and boot ipl.  Anyone know where I can start.

That would imply one exists.

There's a very real reason why IPL has been developmentally dead in the water for the best part of a decade.

Well I used the wayback archive but I could only find the first version...that one, of course, was corrupt.

It is still available on the cancer that is SourceForge (http://ipodlinux.sourceforge.net/download.shtml).

I have a suspicion that a lot people remember iPod Linux through rose tinted nostalgic glasses, so to speak, but if this makes you happy I'm perfectly willing to facilitate this.

Please, let me know if you have any questions or issues.

Okay so I found all these files but then which ones would go where?  Also I found a version of podzilla on 4shared.
