Title: My new rockboxed player (Sansa e280)
Post by: Vortex on May 10, 2007, 11:38:49 AM
Hi everyone,

I finally got my new shiny Sansa e280 today and already installed rockbox on it.

The installation went fine and rockbox is up and running.

However, I had to find out that the audio glitches that were discussed a while ago on these forums (vinyl-like clicking and occasional swapping of stereo channels) are still present. I thought there were patches for these already available on the bug tracker some time ago.

Can I hope for these bugs to be fixed any time soon?

Otherwise, good work everyone! Rockbox is truly awesome. ;D

I think there are patches there,I know about them but I don't know how to implement, sure there are patches,I have the same thing with my sansa, and without rockbox it still problematic.

Well if there already are patches available I wonder why they are not included with rockbox yet.

I really don't want to rush anyone about this, I'm just curious. ;)

Because they're still being worked on or tested.

Yes, they need to not only solve the problem, but be the "right" solution.

but those improvements are added each day?,I think there's a delay of few days to add a function,I don't worry about that,I'm happy by having rockbox in my sansa,it is not better than the original firmware, but it last about 8 hours so for me that's great.Llorean one thing you and the others developers are doing it excellent, the best wishes to all the crew and thank you and thanks to all by this, and keep going, hope all are fine, bye.

There are always occasions where there are minor bugs.. But they are eventually fixed :)

If you want to test out the patches for Sansa (without building it yourself), there are Unofficial precompiled vesions located at the Sansa Rockbox forum of Anything but iPod:

http://www.anythingbutipod.com/forum/forumdisplay.php?f=72

Here is a quick link to my version (just download rockbox_1.zip and rockbox_2.zip):

This is not a minor bug, it prevents me from using rockbox right now.  ;)

Thanks, I will try it out.

EDIT: Thanks cpchan, your custom build work like a charm. It's still ass-slow when scrolling through menus while playback is running, but at least there are no clicks and channel-swapping anymore.

I'm curious whether "fixing it the right way" will fix the slowdown issues too and hope that development will continue to progress as fast.

It is a lot better than what it used to be. :) Scrolling should be a lot smoother soon, since a GPIO button+wheel driver for the Sansa is in progress.

Yes, although the sound still needs a lot of tuning, it is usable enough that I don't use the OF for music anymore. This is great progress considering a month and a half ago there was no sound.

A recent svn-commit says

This should fix the tinniness on e200. Best recipe not worked out yet but I'll perfect later. Independently verified and hopefully will withstand wider testing.

Unfortunately I have no idea what this means and my dictionary doesn't know the word "tinniness". Could someone explain what was fixed here? ;D

Quote from: http://dictionary.reference.com/browse/tinniness
Lacking in timbre or resonance; sounding thin or twangy: a tinny piano.
Having a thin metallic sound: a high tinny voice

hehe, I should have tried the current build before asking that stupid question. The difference is obvious.

It sounds awesome! Unfortunately with the official build I still get the shifting stereo image (hope this will get fixed soon).

I have noticed a small problem though. I don't know if it is caused by the latest current build, but I suddenly hear some faint "electric noise" while rockbox performs some "heavy" tasks (loading EQ-Presets, browsing the Database, etc.). I don't think these noises where audible before but if this is a tradeoff with the improved sound quality I'm more than willing to accept it. Especially since the noise is not audible while playing music.

To sum it all up: Excellent work; a big thanks again to you developers! I'm looking forward to having the stereo bug fixed. ;D

EDIT: The noise is especially noticeable while the player is buffering (?). In other words: immediately before playback starts. Looks like it disappears during playback though.

I just noticed that this patch also fixes the faint volume problem. That's great!

Since you have use my build before- update it. My builds are always patched against SVN. I just build one last night. It will fix your "shifting stereo image" problem.

I already tried your build today, but it seems you did not yet include the audio quality improvement patches of today's svn.

At least when I tried, I got the same "tinny" sound than before.

Apparently your build was updated May. 17, 06:16, however the "tinniness fix patch" was commited 17 May 10:14, so it looks like you missed it. But chances are that the rockbox svn uses a different timezone.

EDIT: Nevermind, I just saw your other post saying

Hold off for an hour or so. I am building a new version now after seeing the fix for "tinniness" in SVN.

Updated to cpchan's latest build and it works perfectly. ;D

Surprisingly there's less of a slowdown now when navigating through menus while playing music, even though I didn't see a patch note anywhere which says that this was fixed.

Well, I'm satisfied now. The way Rockbox now runs on the Sansa is not yet perfect, but it looks like I won't have to use the original firmware anymore.

By the way, including the "playback" menu in the wps's context menu is a very good idea. This should be considered to be included in the main branch.

Yes, I was surprised that it wasn't there is the first place. I plan to upload my lttle patches to flyspray. I just need to break them up.

Today's changes in SVN got rid of the audio glitches. Great work! ;D

Rockbox also runs faster on my Sansa than before. I can finally browse through my music while playing it!
