I think it would be really nice to have a "slider" type progress bar. It could be a single image that travels from one side of the screen to the other, rather than one long image that slowly reveals itself (in that one patch, not sure what it's called). Are there any plans for Rockbox to use this type of progress bar?

Done !
See FS#6505 (http://www.rockbox.org/tracker/task/6505).

Could this work with the FS#4783 patch (http://www.rockbox.org/tracker/4783) (progressbar_ycoord_extension2.1_20070103.patch)?
Would be very useful for pixel perfect tweaking. ;D

I rewrote the y-coord patch, see the tracker entry : FS#4783 (http://www.rockbox.org/tracker/task/4783)

Thanks a bunch NicolasP! Now I can't wait to use it in my WPS.
-
Works well!
One thing though. Is it possible to keep the old progress graphic bar, so it still reveals a change in colour?
See pic for eg:

I had thought of it, but it's not as trivial to implement as a simple slider and I didn't have time to think about it. Maybe I'll try, but later.

Just wanted to give you kudos Nicolas for a no-brainer plugin.
Straight up and down this should have been in Rockbox from the word go. Awesome, awesome stuff. Thank you.

Yeah, you're right. The misguided Rockbox developers focused on silly things like audio playback and stability instead of this critical bit of useless eye candy.

I agree. The developers should have focused on Eye candy more than audio playback xD

Woah, woah. Take it easy. Put down the baby and step away from the ledge.
I never said audio playback and stability are "silly things". I just really dig this plugin.

You missed my point entirely.

BACK ON TOPIC *clears throat*
No, but seriously, so this patch works on all of the targets? All the iPod, iRivers, gigabeat, archos, iAudio, etc? I mean, This would be a VERY helpful patch in normal everyday builds. You could really have some fun with making themes with a "sliding" progress bar? ANd has anyone found any glitches with it if they've used it? Ya, I'm not QUITE expecting a lot of answers, but anyone?
-Dan

Works fine on the iPod Nano. I have it included in my build. I dont have a theme to make use of it yet as I havent had time to make one lately.
And yes, the more design flexibility all the better I say. (as long as it doesnt detract from getting the playback/stability issues sorted!) ;D
-
Yes, normally it should work fine on any target with a bitmap display. Please report any glitches you notice :)
-
Works fine on iAudio X5...
(Stands on soap box)
I REALLY wish some of you guys would try to better understand the importance of design. Not disrespecting the hard work you guys put into Rockbox, and I love my Rockboxed X5 to death, but I'm a designer by trade and it's frustrating to constantly hear the potshots you guys give to anything design-related. I personally don't feel good design is at all "useless eye candy," it's an important attention-grabbing element that many people appreciate.
To me, one of the biggest draws of Rockbox is the flexibility in designing WPS's (and I've designed several). Though trivial to you, improvements such as this "useless" slider patch can only make a better Rockbox, which is all we want!
-
While I too would like this slider bar, I would much prefer longer battery life on my iPod. I'm all for eye candy (I use Senab's build because I love Album Art) but usability *has* to go first.

Nobody said design was unimportant. All Febs said was that other things are more critical. If you think eye-candy is more critical than actual functionality working properly then you've got some misguided priorities. The prettiest interface in the world will fail if any time you try to use it it crashes, or if it's unable to perform its intended functional purpose.
-
Not all developers work on the top priority issues, even though everybody agrees on them being top priority. So some have time to work on "eye-candy". Where's the problem ?
I don't see why some people seem to want the development to be split up between functionality and design, as if it wasn't possible to do both at the same time.
-
I have nothing whatsoever against improving the design elements of Rockbox. I reacted to the comment that this design element should have been in Rockbox "from the get go," which is unrealistic. I regret that my sarcastic remark has deflected this thread off-topic.

Tell me where I said design was more important than functionality - perhaps I missed that. I'm simply defending the importance of design, but of course functionality should take priority.
Sorry to take the thread off topic as well, I just thought it needed to be said.
