No matter what, it's recognizing it as a mac 5g 60GB ipod. I must've gotten this thing restored on my Windows laptop ten times already and it's still saying the same thing. (iTunes and Disk Utility aren't running as I try to install)
It worked once, just once. Then I had no idea how to install a theme (this site never tells you how, just how to upload them) so it never really worked. I uninstalled everything and started from scratch. Except now there's a permanent folder in the auto-install with my iPod's name that isn't anywhere. Not even in Disk Utility, and it still gives me the same "It's not a fat32 formatted iPod."

When you say "resotred on my Windows Laptop" - what steps did you take to "restore" it?
-
I went as the wiki instructed.
[...]A popup box stating "iTunes has detected a Macintosh-formatted iPod. You must restore this iPod before you can use it on Windows". Then in the iTunes window you'll have an option to 'Restore' the iPod. Follow the steps (iPod Software Update will be downloaded within iTunes if required). The iPod will be restored, and you'll get a window stating "Your iPod has been restored to factory settings, and is restarting. Please leave the iPod connected, and it will appear in the source list once it completes the restore process.".
You'll see a progress bar move along the iPod's screen. Once done, you'll be prompted within Windows to name the iPod and asked whether you want to automatically sync music (and possibly photos). Untick the automatic sync options and proceed. At this point you'll see your iPod connected in iTunes and the 'Format' will be 'Windows'. You'll then be able to eject the iPod.
You can then return to your Mac and install Rockbox and continue to use your iPod with iTunes on your Mac.
[edit] It decided to work like it arbitrarily did before. Now I have to install themes but how can I? On a mac, I can't have a ".rockbox" which would explain why it wouldn't unzip the files (I used Parallels and had Windows unzip it).
-
The .rockbox directory is still there, it's just hidden on the Mac by default. You can make it visible (http://forums.rockbox.org/index.php?topic=10420.msg79958#msg79958).

You can have a .rockbox - it is just hidden by default.
I don't know what archive program you are using, but 7Zip is free and will do the job for you. A properly packaged theme just needs extracted to the root of your iPod - you don't need to unpack the theme manually. If the theme is properly packaged all the appropriate files will be put in the appropriate folder for you.
Moving to the WPS board.

Alright. Now that got it working. Now to start putting in my music.
Sucks that iTunes doesn't export in m3u. Have to figure out how to do get a playlist done another way.

NO! MacOS can't merge folders. it will delete the .rockbox directory and put the new one from the theme archive in it's place.
I use this widget to display hidden folders: http://www.apple.com/downloads/dashboard/developer/hiddenfiles.html

I apologize if I gave dangerous advice, but is this a function of MacOS/X or of the built-in archive program?
-
don't worry, nobody could expect it, that's why it's so dangerous. I had to learn it the hard way.. one hour of work lost.
It's a function (or better: lack thereof) of Mac OS/X.

Yeah, I have to do it one by one. That widget will help rather than always copy/pasting stuff in the terminal.
-
Other archive managers used in OS/X do not do this (or at least, many cross-platform ones don't opting for a consistent behaviour cross-platform rather than OS-specific quirks that can cause such problems). It's a function of it's file/folder browser and of the inbuilt file extractor (StuffIt was it?) I believe.

On my MacBook I use two apps to install themes. The Terminal, which came with OSX, and Invisibility Toggler (double-click to do what it says).
Download the theme's zipped file, open/run the Terminal and mount the iPod.
In the Terminal type "cd " (note space) and drag n drop the iPod on it. Hit enter. Now it is the current directory.
Locate the zip file/theme, in the Terminal type "unzip ", and drag n drop the zipped file on it and hit enter. It might ask to replace some files, mostly icons or fonts, type "A".
Quit Terminal and unmount the iPod. The new theme should be available.
Sometimes when the zipped file is not created properly and the files/folders go into the main directory of the iPod I have to use Invisibility Toggler to show all the hidden folders and move the theme's files where they should be, you'll see the folders in the ".rockbox" folder on the iPod.
