Title: Recording through headphones
Post by: zajacattack on October 13, 2007, 06:02:21 PM
I know iPodLinux has a function that can reverse the headphones and record through them, is there something like this in rockbox?

That's not specifically a feature of ipodlinux, it's a hardware feature of certain ipods.  And yes, on those ipods, Rockbox can record via the headphone socket.

As far as I can tell the 3g, 4g  and photo iPods should be able to record via the headphone jack.

Is there no way to do this on the other iPods?

No.

This is a matter of hardware.
The other iPods don't have the hardware to record through the headphone jack.

As I have already asked today..

Soup, do you think there is a possibility that you could record on ipod video through remote control .. via headphone??

What EXACTLY is confusing about this statement?

Alright I think that may be my faul. So,

Llorean: I wasnt talking about headphone jack but about remote control which is plugged through bottom where is mic conector located.

And the question is: could I record fru remote control .. so, via earphone??

First, are you asking whether you can record through the dock connector on the bottom of the iPod, or are you asking whether you can use a specific remote control accessory to record?

It is possible to record using the dock connector if you buy or make a connector with the appropriate pins (I believe that there is information on the ipodlinux site about the pinout of the dock connector).

Second, are you asking whether you can use headphones as a microphone for the purpose of recording?  If so, the answer is yes, although headphones tend to be quite inefficient when used for this purpose.  If this is not your question, then I'm not sure what you mean by "via earphones."

Ok.

The second variation is right. I am asking whether I can use headfone for the purpose of recording. But I alreadu know I can do it through headfone jack.. but also know and as you mentiond I can do it through the dock conector.

The hole thing is: I have got the iPod Video 5gen. and the classic remote control sold by Apple. I am wondering if there is a possibility I could record using just that remote control which is plugged to dock conector and the ordinery apple earphones and of course ROCKBOX.

And if how?

Would I have to rewrite some part of rockbox or use ipodlinux /which is by the way a bit complicated to install/?

I dont mind quality of a record. I just would like to have an opportunity to record sometimes something for me. Just like a notes..

No you can't. We've said this enough times now. You CANNOT record through the headphone jack on the iPod Video.

There is no "also" here. It's the only place you can record through on the iPod Video.

I personally have no idea. I've not heard of any sort of remote control which allows recording.

Sry. I meant to write: I already know I CANT... the T just somehow fell off..

(you see, a stupid letter can make such a misunderstanding)

And the thing meantioned at the last, GodEater, is exactly what I am wondering about..

If there is no answer I will stop asking about that  :-X  in order not to make someone upset with repeting questions.

Cheers.

The only way to do recording would be if they had attached the line-in pins to the output circuit somehow.  However, if recording had been intended with this product I am sure that they would have advertised this capability loudly.

[edit: removed irrelevant speculation]

I believe what he was asking is if he can use the 3.5mm jack that is on the remote control ( that plugs into the dock connector) to record with.  I wouldnlt see the need for 2 earphone jacks unless it is to let ohters listen to your IPOD also.  So I would figure it to be a LINE IN/ MIC.  I am not sure.  I have an ITALK which plugs into the Dock Connector and has a 3.5mm jack on it ( which is a line in/mic)

Maybe this clears it up slightly?

The Official Apple remote only has one headphone jack, not two, and it is clearly a headphone jack not a line-in.
