Title: mini (2g 4gig) shuts down when usb cable inserted
Post by: chrisneedscoffee on December 28, 2006, 11:20:10 PM
I installed rockbox on my ipod through my mac. It starts up fine when not connected, plays the one song that I loaded onto it to test when I first installed it, but when I put the usb cable back in, it just displays a usb image (graphic of the plug), shuts down, and won't start back up. It won't show up in disk utility either. Anyone know what's going on?

I'm not sure if the same applies to you but I observed almost the same behaviour on a 2nd gen Ipod Mini with installed CVS build of the 29th of December - only that the one I had was freezing while displaying the usb plug picture. Usually the Ipod should automatically boot into disk mode if it doesn't you have to do that manually.

Here's what you have to do: hold "Menu" and "Select" (center button) while USB is not connected until the Ipod reboots. As soon as you see the apple in the boot process you'd have to hold "Select" and "Play". Then the Ipod should show the disk mode screen and appear as drive when inserting the plug - you should then put a new version of rockbox on it (just an "update" as described in the manual I suppose).

You can try the latest builds (daily or CVS) if they don't work too you'd just have to repeat the procedure. My only advice is that you shouldn't take dailies from either the 28th or 29th - which I tested and weren't working for me. While testing on the 29th, the last one working correctly was the one of 27th but I haven't looked into it at a later time - so maybe it's fixed in the latest.

Hope it helps :)

I loaded the newer build and it worked - went right into disk mode when I plugged in the USB. Thanks!  :)
