I recently purchased a Sansa e250r (refurbished). It is able to boot into the original firmware fine. I installed the drivers on my WinXP machine and can see the contents of the e250r when it is connected via USB. I cannot get it into manufacturer mode. The steps I followed were:
1. Unit is turned off
2. Turn on Hold
3. Press and hold select (center button between the scroll wheel)
4. Insert USB (while still holding select)
At this point the player turns on. The screen stays off, the scroll wheel turns blue. I never see a drive mounted or any other sign. When I try to run the e200rpatcher.exe it reports
[INFO] Searching for E200R
[ERR] Could not find any USB busses.
I am able to get the player into Recovery Mode which mounts a drive to my PC. I tried loading other MI4s from http://daniel.haxx.se/sansa/mi4.html. All load fine, the original firmware loads fine but I can never get into manufacturer mode.
Any suggestions are welcome. I am trying to prepare this device as a gift for Christmas so timing is of the essence. Thanks you!

Here's the instructions according to the Rhapsody wiki page (http://www.rockbox.org/twiki/bin/view/Main/SansaE200RInstallation):
1. Download e200rpatcher.exe
2. Download e200-manufac-driver.zip and extract it somewhere on your computer.
3. Attach your e200R to your computer in manufacturer mode (turn on the hold switch, hold select and plug in USB while continuing to hold select for about 10s)
4. When Windows asks for the driver, point it to the folder you extracted the driver zip file to.
5. Run the e200patcher.exe file and follow the prompts. Your Sansa should have some text on the screen. If the last line says "(something) aborted" then head to the forums and look for threads relating to your problem.
6. If it says "Firmware Unlocked, Proceed to Step 2" then it was successful and you can continue.
You can head over to the wiki page (the link's above) to fetch the driver. When you connect in manufacture mode again, make sure Windows asks you for a driver, then point it to the driver you downloaded from the wiki page.
Once you've managed to patch the Sansa bootloader, you can continue with the installation; this page (http://www.rockbox.org/twiki/bin/view/Main/SansaE200RInstallationFromWindows) will guide you with the rest of the process.

Thanks for the reply Lambda. I followed those instructions each and every time, but the part that is giving me problems is trying to get into manufacturer mode. Once I perform the steps and the e250r is connected via USB, WinXP never asks me for a driver. I never even see the USB icon in my tray and WinXp cannot find any connected devices. The e250r just stays with the screen off and the scroll wheel turned on (blue). At this point, I must hold down the power button for 10seconds to turn it off.

I know this may sound bad, but try the installation process on another WinXP box.
This is one of the reasons I avoid Windows: it's really finicky when it comes to hardware installation sometimes. I did an installation for a friend on his E260R, but his WinXP desktop was not being cooperative, so we ended up doing it on my Linux laptop.

Unfortunately I don't have any spare machines at my house, but I do have a NSLU2 running Unslung. I can try running the Linux binary (http://download.rockbox.org/bootloader/sandisk-sansa/e200r-patcher/e200rpatcher.linux) on there with the e250r connected to the Disk 1 USB port (support USB HDD, Flash drives, and hubs). I hope if I put the e250r into manufacturer mode it will be recognized by the NSLU2 or else this plan fails. Last step is to borrow someone else's XP machine. Thanks for your help again :)

The NSLU2 has an ARM core so you can't run the (x86) Linux binary that we offer for download. You'd have to (cross-) compile your own e200rpatcher for your particular target...

Oops! Thanks, Badger! That would have been a wasted effort. Didn't notice it was for the x86 targets only. At this point I think I'll try to borrow someone else's WinXP machine as setting up a proper dev env on the NSLU2 is going to be an undertaking and getting Linux to run on my notebook has not been successful due to the the integrated chips on it.

I had the same issue with my wife's E250R when I first tried to do the Rockbox install. WinXP would not call up the new hardware wizard. So, I moved the USB cable to an alternate port on the same computer, and then the Sansa would enter Mfg. mode correctly, and I got the WinXP hardware wizard. So, if I were you, try moving the cable to another USB port on the same computer if you have one, and try the install again.

Update: I tried on the alternate USB port on my machine and it didn't recognize it still, but on the other PC it worked like a charm. Thanks so much for your help :)
