Title: iPod 5G video (30 GB and 60 GB versions)
Post by: Ravager on July 25, 2009, 11:13:23 PM
Hello, I seem to be having difficulties with Rockbox, and think it's player specific maybe (since this has never happened to me before on other players)  but am not sure, so posted in here. If this isn't the correct spot, I apologize.

I have to iPods that I am installing Rockbox on, a 30 GB 5th gen video, and a 60 GB 5th gen video. I am running into the same issues on both machines. Before anyone tells me to read the manual, I have read it up and down, back and front. I have had rockbox on an iPod nano (1st gen) and installed it on other iPod Nanos and all worked the same, perfectly as the manual says.

Here is the issue I am having. I am blind so have to use the voice functionality on the 30 GB video, and the person that I am installing this for is blind also, so must do the same (60 GB video). I installed Rockbox on his using the install utility, and installed it on mine originally with the install utility, and then deleted it, uninstalled everything rockbox, and manually installed it back onto mine, and still get the same issues on both machines. When in the File menu, I created a directory for the music. When you hold long select, it should pop up a context menu with "playlist, playlist catalog, cut, copy, so on and so on. Instead, when I hit the long select/context menu, on any of the directories under Files, I get at the top going down:
insert
recursively insert directories
cut
copy
paste
"really delete?"
properties
add to shortcuts
clear recording directory
and finally pitch

The manual says nothing about "insert, recursively insert directories" and instead of delete being there, it says "really delete?. I went into recursively insert directories, and there the playlist, and playlist catalog pop up, along with other things.

When I click on playlist catalog, that used to on the Nano I had, bring me into a menu that let me add to playlist, add to new playlist, and create new playlist. When I select Playlist catalog now, it does nothing, and after about a second, just lands me back on the folder I originally had selected. Along with that, for some reason, "really delete" doesn't seem correct and also doesn't delete anything, and also, when I click on things, it acts like I clicked on something else.

Basically it seems that a lot of the menus are out of sync with the cursor, mostly under Files, but also in spots in the settings, and I can't get a bookmarks folder to show up on the main menu when you first boot rockbox (yes, I did read the manual over and over and over, and also several more times on trying to create a playlist, and on getting bookmarks folder to show).

I tried to hunt down and find an earlier current build on the "older versions" page, but the latest one there was 2.4. Can someone help me figure this out, or direct me to an older version that supports both the Ipod 5th gen Video 30 GB and 60 GB models?

Thank you in advance.

*edit*

Okay, after going through each and every menu, and getting slightly upset at the way things were going, I stumbled onto something. I don't have any clue what I clicked on, changed (because I know I did adjust some of the settings) or what, but bookmarks finally showed up on the main startup menu. I don't think I changed anythign in the bookmarks section in settings so *shrug*. Also, after clicking on things, randomly finding and tweaking settings, something did pop up under Recursively  insert directories that wasn't there originally. Now, I can create playlists, but am still having issues with things in the context menu not matching the manual's descriptions. Also, the cursor still doesn't seem to line up with what it selects, so I am lost on that one. I guess as long as I can create playlists for this guy, most of the other things in the context menu can be done through the computer while plugged in.  Again, sorry for posting in wrong area, and also thanks.

the manual is correct, it sounds to me like the voice file is not however. Possibly rbutil installed the wrong one or an old one. Have you tried installing a voice file manually? If that doen't work, can you create one yourself?

We still have some issues with Rockbox Utility in regards to releases: while it can install releases just fine it doesn't differentiate for everything else between releases and current (svn) version. This (unfortunately) includes voice files. If you installed Rockbox 3.3 I'd suggest installing the voice file manually, or create the voice file yourself using Rockbox Utility.

Actually, the 30 GB video has everything (bootloader, rockbox, and .voice file) manually installed, and the 60 GB video has everything installed via the rbutilqt Install Utility. On both iPods, I get the same issues. I haven't tried creating a .voice file, but if it's not pretty simple, I don't think I'll be able to do it.

I just don't understand how, if the menus aren't aligned with the .voice file or not aligned with the voice itself, how I can still do things, but in a totally and completely different way (for certain tasks, still no way to kill off directories on the new version among other things). I mean I can create playlists, but the way is so different than both what the older version was and what the manual says, that I can't see it being just "mis-aligned". Do I just have some major probalem and bug that is like so screwed up, that it makes no sense? I mean two different players, two different installation methods, and two different versions of Rockbox v3.3 (for each respective player).

What about getting an older version of Rockbox, the bootloader, and the .voice files? When I checked the "older versions" page, I didn't see anything for iPod, and nothing newer than version 2.4 I think.

Thanks again in advance.

You need to have a voice file that is correct for your version of rockbox, if you installed a current build, you need a current voicefile.
If you installed the release you need a voicefile for the release.
Going back to an older version will not change that , you still need a voice file that matches your rockbox build.

Well, I understand that I need a current .voice file that matches up with the build I pick. When I went to install the software on the 30 GB Video manually, I got everything from
http://www.rockbox.org/download/byhand.cgi

I went to the install for the iPod video 30 GB, and then downloaded the matching voice file. If the voice file doesn't match up to the version I installed, then it is because the link was wrong, not because I just randomly picked a .voice file. Why  though would it do what it is doing with my issues on both players, especially since i know that i have the right file for the manual install? The problems are the exact same.

The reason I wanted an older version of Rockbox, post 2.5 I guess, is because I know that there weren't the issues that I am having. On my iPod nano, I don't have any of the issues, and everything lines up exactly with the manual. If I get an old version of Rockbox, and an old .voice file that matches up to what I am installing, then I am guessing this will be a lot easier for me and you guys.

The reason I posted this in the Player specific thread was because I don't think this is just a .voice problem, but possibly something having to do with my two specific players. Maybe something on the players themselves is screwing this up?
