Title: 5G iPod recording clicking
Post by: pomme on February 13, 2007, 11:02:08 AM
Hi there. Long time rb user, first time poster.

I decided to get a Belkin Tunetalk microphone for my iPod. I thought I would just pop in to the recording screen and see what happened (I've been using the rb recording on an Archos Jukebox Recorder 20 for many years). I got some crazy levels and it turns out I was just recording some LOUD clicking sound.. much more than what you would expect to be a hard drive clicking sound. I am not able to record any sound from the mic.

Anyhow I got on the forums and looked around and saw that the recording on the 5G isn't quite working yet. So, I firured I would just boot the original firmware and use the device as it was intended. But the loud clicking sound is STILL there. However, the sound recording does work, but the clicking is much louder than the recording. One note.. if I set the quality to "low" (in ipod firmware) the rate of clicking is about half that of when it is set to high, stereo recording..

Before I totally restore my original firmware for testing/or do anything else drastic..

1) does anyone else get the loud clicking sound when attempting to use the recoring feature in Rockbox on the iPod 5G? For me it appeard weather there is a mic plugged in or not, using any combination of recording settings..

2) Is anyone able to use their Belkin Tunetalk mic successfully by booting up to the original firmware? Maybe I goofed something up during install and I can just start from scratch..

It sounds like something wrong with the device. I'd return it as soon as possible.

As far as I know, Belkin have this clicking because the HD write.
They said to use external mics. Sometimes works, sometimes not.

But I think your decice have some problem.

I have Belkin Tunetalk on my video 5G and don't work with Rockbox.
I need to made one dock connector.
I use one dock conector and external mics from Sound PRofessionals with battery box and works good.

Thanks for the responses.

I guess If someone could tell me if when they go to the recording screen in rockbox, if they see some erratic levels - that will let me know that for whatever reason my ipod is performing differently than others.

Can anyone help with this?

I would be surprised if a device like the Belkin Tunetalk worked with Rockbox.  Doesn't the Tunetalk communicate with the iPod using the Apple device protocols?

I have Tunetalk and Rockbox and don't work.
I make one dock to work with Rockbox.

I'm waiting for some new releases to work with tunetalk. ;D

Thanks

Sorry. I probably wasn't being clear.

I am aware that the belkin tunetalk does not work with rockbox.

My problem is that belkin tunetalk is not working with my ipod original firmware either.

In both rockbox and ipod firmware I get the same loud clicking sound when I try to record. In rockbox, that sound is all I get. In ipod, I get a recording with the clicking.

I am trying to determine if I have a defective ipod.

If I can get confirmation that others are experiencing the loud clicking sound when they attempt to record in rockbox (whether or not you even have a recording device) then I will work on the assumption that I have a bad build or something and format the machine and try again. - Or, I am interested if people are able to successfully record with tunetalk by booting into the original firmware. Because I am not.

*I am curious as to whether the rockbox install could have affected something in the original firmware*

Just want to check in with others on their experience before I format my ipod, or return it to the store and exchange it.

:)

Thanks for your help folks!

Okay.

I was under the impression that recording works okay if you get a proper microphone with a line-in dock connector.  But I haven't rigged myself one of these yet.

I have not heard of the Apple firmware being corrupted by installing Rockbox before.  That is to say, I'm not aware of any major bugs in ipodpatcher.

My guess is that the tunetalk isn't working properly.

Sorry I can't be of more help.

Yeah I get the same sound when I use an external microphone..

BUT

I also get the same sound in rockbox using nothing at all (not even connecting the tunetalk)

Thanks for the reply

That indicates a hardware problem in your iPod.
Here is a sample recording I made with line-in selected as the source (your 5th generation has no microphone input) but without connecting anything to the line-in connector.
http://rockbox.cleansoap.org/files/blank_recording.wav

Hmm, -95dB noise floor on one channel, -75dB on the other.

EDIT:Changing the source selection to "Mic" produces identical results, so the clicking you are getting appears not to be as a result of Rockbox, but of your hardware.

Great thanks. That's what I was looking for.

I wonder if I can get it exchanged since the problem is with a use outside of regular operations?

If you haven't already returned the Belkin product, I would take it with you to the Apple store, and demonstrate the clicking it causes on stock firmware. (remove all traces of rockbox first, including but not limited to the bootloader)
If they say "ahh, that Belkin POS is defective", have them test it on one of their iPods in the store - I'm willing to bet it will work fine.
