Title: Rockbox installation 101...HELP
Post by: guster61 on June 17, 2008, 08:59:26 AM
Hi everyone, I'm new here so bear with me please.

OK heres the deal, my computer crashed and so when I got it up and running I needed to re-install gigabeat room software of which I could not find the cd for.  So, I googled it and thought I had found the software but of course it was gigabeat with rockbox so I installed it to no avail it wiped my Gigabeat F20 clean and so now here I am with Rockbox installed on my computer and a dead gigabeat.

When I power up the gigabeat it just boots into the time screen and I set that up then it goes to a blank screen and no functions work at all, I have to unplug it to shut it down.

So I have Rockbox and all the files on my computer, what do I do next ?  Go easy on me cuz I am baffled at this point.

Thanks in advance :)

We have a very fine manual that shows you how to install Rockbox. You can read that here (http://download.rockbox.org/manual/rockbox-gigabeatf/rockbox-build.html).

There is also a link to our in-house tool, Rockbox Utility, that simplifies the installation process. It's located in the manual.

Thanks for the tips.  But like I said I already have rockbox and utility installed.  I dont know where to go next.  I also might add to my original post that my computer does not recognize the gigabeat.

thanks again  HELP !!!

It sounds to me like you have downloaded Rockbox Utility and perhaps downloaded the Rockbox build, but that you haven't actually installed Rockbox to your player.  So, as LambaCalculus has already suggested, "where to go next" is to read the installation chapter of the manual.

I also might add to my original post that my computer does not recognize the gigabeat.

Please describe EXACTLY what happens, both on the Gigabeat and on the computer, when you connect the Gigabeat via USB.

Nothing happens when gigabeat is connected to computer via usb, its not recognized at all. And rockbox is installed along with utility, it just doesnt recognize the gigabeat.

You still haven't answered my question.  What happens on the Gigabeat itself when you connect via USB?  Is anything displayed on the screen?

And please stop saying that "Rockbox is installed."  If you can't connect your Gigabeat via USB, then you have not yet installed Rockbox.

OK sorry for any confusion .... when gigabeat is connected via usb, the screen just stays froze an orangeish yellowish pattern is displayed that is blank after initial turn on of gigabeat (first time and date is set up then it goes to that screen)  connecting to usb does nothing different.

As far as saying rockbox is installed.....guess what im saying is that it is downloaded to my computer along with utilty but obviously not on the gigabeat.

Disconnect from USB, and turn the battery switch off, and then on again.  Power the Gigabeat on.  Reconnect to USB.  Report EXACTLY what happens, including the exact text of any messages that are displayed.

Has the Gigabeat been acting up previously?  It sounds like you have been unable to get a USB connection due to a pre-existing condition.

I don't understand how simply downloading or installing software to your computer can affect your unit.  Did you try to install Rockbox without reading the instructions?  What did you do that led to this behavior?

-------------

Anyway, it sounds like something didn't go right with how you tried to install Rockbox.  It may be necessary to follow these instructions: http://www.rockbox.org/twiki/bin/view/Main/GigabeatFXPort#Gigabeat_Recovery_Procedures

Well I explained that in my original post...yes i downloaded rockbox without reading instructions, thought it was original software for gigabeat...and yes i dont understand how it took everything off the gigabeat either....i screwed up and i admit it....  I think next step is taking it apart and doing the recovery procedure like you suggested...... i will post again after i do that

thanks for your help

If you're comfortable doing the recovery procedure then I think that's the surest way to get back to a known state at the moment.  We can try to dig further into the details of exactly what you did and try to figure out if your issue can be resolved another way.  But doing the recovery procedure will probably be faster at this point.

OK I finally got rockbox installed on the gigabeat by doing the whole recovery process.  Now I have issues with Rockbox of which I will post under the correct topic.

Thanks for all the help
