Title: iPod Classic (160GB) Not detected by Computer
Post by: mrmeth on July 20, 2014, 03:03:58 PM
Hey Rockboxers,

My Computer doesn't detect my iPod Classic anymore. Now I can't put any music on the iPod.
I've succesfully installed Rockbox
(Installation found here http://www.freemyipod.org/wiki/EmCORE_Installation/iPodClassic/UMSboot )

When I launch the iPod it tells me 'devices not recognized'.
The iPod is in the device Management, only not as plugged in http://prntscr.com/44lsu0

How can I solve this problem!
Thanks in advance.

When Windows (with iTunes) detects that this is an iPod, it makes some assumptions about it. However, with Rockbox, your iPod is COMPLETELY different, so those assumptions turn out to be incorrect.
This is not easiliy fixable without using an alternate build of Rockbox, see http://forums.rockbox.org/index.php/topic,43493.msg220761.html#msg220761 for more details.

Windows does absolutely no such thing.

Please, lets keep the support offered here grounded in reality. I don't want to have to start throwing my weight around and deleting posts filled with misinformation, I shouldn't have to.

*Windows* doesn't do anything differently here.

There is an issue with some Windows *applications* that make assumptions based on VID/PID, but Windows itself couldn't care less. As far as it is concerned, nothing changed at all. And even if the user had any one of the problematic applications installed on the system it wouldn't affect the host's ability to detect or mount the device at all.

A Macintosh, however...but, I digress. I'm somewhat sensitive when it comes to people making outright false claims, as a user like yourself has no way of knowing the claims made aren't actually true until someone like myself steps in and rectifies the situation.

What you're almost certainly going to have to do here is mount the iPod using the fallback image embedded in emCORE.
There is a known working revision of Rockbox embedded into emCORE itself to provide USB access in an event such as this one. You can access it via:

emCORE main menu(*) -> Tools -> Run Rockbox fallback image

(* this may require holding down any key during boot to expose the emCORE menu if you have set the emCORE fastboot mode)

Well... Sorry.  :-[

I do remember from my old windows days that iTunes provided some sort of special driver (iPodService and AppleMobileDevice or something like that) that did weird stuff so my iPod took forever to mount. That was how I came to that conclusion. Sorry if I misinformed anyone...  ::-[
