Title: iPod Video 5.5G - Extremely slow data transfer and Rockbox Panics
Post by: cleanycloth on August 05, 2017, 03:01:05 PM
Hi all,

Picked up an iPod Video for super cheap and wanted to upgrade the storage, so I bought a CF-ZIF adapter (cheapo one from eBay), Qumox CF-SD adapter, and a Komputer Bay 128GB SD card.

Installed it all, dropped Rockbox on it, boots up just fine. Go to transfer some music to it (which takes 30 seconds or so just to start), at which point it transfers four files and drops to 0 bytes per second.
Rockbox then gets confused and panics. Reset it, tried again today, and attempting to transfer 1GB of music was going to take 45 minutes!
Plugged in the original HDD, installed Rockbox on it, transferred the same music, copied all of it in a minute flat.
Swapped the SD card to a 32GB Sandisk card. Same problem as the 128GB one. Swapped the CF adapter for a Seagate ST1 Microdrive, same problem (though that drive has some SMART seek issues so I think that might just be a dead drive).
There is an LED on the board to indicate disk access, but when Windows goes flat, the activity light just stays on for a while, the flickers a bit, then continues transferring.

Both cards and the CF-SD adapter with the 128GB card in work fine outside of the iPod.

I managed to copy over a FLAC file to the drive (after waiting over a minute to copy the 28MB file), it gets about a minute or so into the song and it skips itself. I'm listening to an MP3 song now and I'll report back as to how that goes.

I'm not sure what to do now, kinda tempted just to send the CF adapters back and get an iFlash adapter, but I don't know if that will fix it. Is it a problem with the iPod itself, the HDD cable, or my CF adapters?

Hope you can help me :S

People regularly report problems using CF or SD card adapters in iPods.  Most of them appear to be only marginally compatible with the rockbox ATA driver.

Ahh, yeah that's true. I spent ages fiddling about with it and I just gave up and bought an iFlash Solo to be honest (should've bought the dual for future upgrades but oh well lol). I'll report back on how well that goes.

I was starting to think it was the CF-ZIF adapter board, despite there being almost nothing to it but an LED and a couple of resistors or whatever, it was even being slow with my ST1 drive. Though that and the SD adapter were the only two cards I had around to test with, so it might be that both are incompatible. I don't know.

All I know is that I hope the iFlash will work 10x better and that it's not a fault with my iPod :S (I also bought a new ribbon cable from them just in case).

Hey :)

-English = broken, my bad, hope you'll still understand-

I was having the same issue and found your post ahah. I currently own both ipod 6g and 5.5g.
Both are equiped with the iflash quad.

With the 6G which run a "tweaked" version of rockbox (because 6G are not "officialy supported", transfers are around 20Mo/s.

With the 5.5G, which I build today, transfers are reaaally slow as you say (around 3-4 Mo/s), it runs the latest version of rockbox.

Could our respective issues be linked ? (If it's not, i'll make a post of my own to discuss of it  ;) )

Thank's for your work.
