Title: Rockbox always reboots into diskmode (iPod Nano)
Post by: bobdmb on June 06, 2007, 03:36:06 AM
Hey all,

i have a very weired problem. When i want rockbox to play music while connected to the pc (to charge the ipod nano 1g), i press and hold "menu" while i insert the connector cable. It seems like everything is ok, rockbox is still there but after a few seconds up to a few minutes, rockbox reboots into disk mode.
This is pretty annoying, does anyone experience the same issues, and if so, how can i fix it?

I don't own an ipod nano anymore, but I think the USB detection was working quite well when I used it...
When does it reboot? -> when you press a button, when the song ended etc.
What build/bootloader are you using?
Does it also happen when you plug your ipod into a wallcharger?

actually i don't know which bootloader i'm using, but the build is senab's iPod build (30th April 2007). I haven't had any problems with that either, but the rockbox version i was using before was about ~1 year old. I've updated the bootloader in february or so.

I have this problem as well with my Nano.
What I've found is that I need to hold the menu button for up to a minute after I've inserted the USB cable.  My computer then gives me an error message that "a usb device has malfunctioned and is not recognized".  I then know it is safe to release the menu button and charge my Nano as it plays in Rockbox.

I think this problem was introduced with this commit.

Particularly annoying on the nano. Often when you just pull the cable out in disk mode it shows that weird empty battery icon then the screen goes blank. The problem with this is the player is still on and draining the battery but looks like it is turned off. When you try to use it the next day the battery is flat.

What you are describing here is a defect in APPLE's firmware.  This is in no way related to Rockbox, other than at the moment Rockbox relies on Apple's disk mode.

However, I just discovered a somewhat similar behaviour on my Sansa.
I plugged in the USB plug while holding down the center button. Rockbox continued to operate as normal, but a few seconds later playback stopped and the USB plug icon was displayed on screen. ???

I hate to say "me too", but I'm having the same behavior with the current Rockbox build (2007-06-18) on my iPod Video 60GB.  I have to hold down the Menu button for an inordinately long amount of time until the "USB Device not Recognized" message comes up on my WinXP machine.

*Not* having the same issue with the 80GB 5.5G that I own.

Just hold menu for a *long* time people - about 10 seconds or so while you plug in the USB cable. Make sure all the Rockbox threads have had time to be notified that there's a USB connection, but that it's ok - menu was being held.

I tested this with a build from yesterday, and it worked perfectly every time.

So the charging icon doesn't appear for about 10 seconds? On nano it appears straight away indicating it's started charging and you can release the button.

No, the charging icon appears nearly immediately, but if let go of the menu button as soon as I see it, the iPod still ends up deciding to enter disk mode...
