My 30gig iPod seems reluctant to boot to its original firmware, I was sitting here for about 20 minutes and finally managed to get it to work.
Is there any reason for this? (I held menu when starting it up - pushed and held menu to turn it on)
-
Lately I've been having the same issue with my Nano. Sometimes it takes 6 or more tries before it will boot the original firmware. When I first installed Rockbox, I could boot into the original firmware without a problem. *shrugs*
-
... took me 6 tries yesterday as well - dunno why it was being so persnickety?
-
If you need to boot to the Apple firmware often, I'd suggest using the iPL Loader 2 bootloader instead. On bootup you'll be shown a menu and you can choose to bootup whatever you like.

I have a nano with the same issue booting into apples firmware used to always work first time but now it takes a number of reboots to try and get the loader to boot the right OS.

it would be great if you could tell it to boot through some setting in rockbox when you wanted it to
that way when you turn your iPod on its always on rockbox, then you decide hey i haven't watch season 1 of "that 70's show" in a long time
MENU>Bootloader>Original Apple Firmware> Are You Sure?> YES> Please wait a moment
;D ;D ;D ;D ;Dnow that would be cool ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D

Yes I like the sound of that, as long as the next time I boot my ipod after booting into Apples fireware it boot back into rockbox again.
But I admit that as soon as rockbox as its own USB mode I will not need to boot into the stock firmware very much.

I started having the same problem -- so I installed iPL Loader 2 on it and have never looked back.

Is this an issue with a new build? I have problems occasionally, but it usually is because my finger moves during startup. If I am careful to keep my finger still it usually works.
-
I had this problem when i first started using rockbox as well. What I do is use my pointer finger, and press down firmly on menu, and wait till it says loading original firmware then release, best of luck.
Silly Rabit, trix are for kids!

ive been using ipl loader for a while nothings ogne wrong with mine maybe u guys should try it out
-
Me thinks the problem is simply you move your finger or wtv you poke the wheel with ;) While it's booting up. Rockbox makes the wheel respond a lot more compared to the Apple wheel, so do not move your digit at all as soon as you press and hold it to boot it up.
-
Yeah, that is the problem, maybe there should be a way to lower the sensitivity of the scroll wheel during startup? because If I use my thumb it never works, because I more than often activate the scroll wheel. Maybe it could be made so that the scroll wheel is disabled during startup? Or maybe you could even change it to the select (middle) button, as that cant activate the scroll wheel.

you guys could install loader 2 without the linux on it.
I did and It works great

The reason for it to take 6 tries to boot to the iPod firmware is obvious....
User : iPod, boot to iPod firmware.
iPod : Do I have to, I mean it sucks.
User : iPod, boot to iPod firmware.
iPod: I have to work with that iTunes, and they think they are soooooo good, when they just arent. I dont want to.
User : iPod, boot to iPod firmware.
iPod : Can I just stay with the Rockbox. I mean it is soooo cool, it lets me work with all sorts of codecs.
User : iPod, boot to iPod firmware.
iPod : We could play all those cool games. C'mon, you know you love RB :)
User : iPod, boot to iPod firmware. NOW!
iPod : Dear User, my bestest friend, you can customise the WPS...
User : iPod, boot to iPod firmware. NOW, OR I WILL DROP YOU IN A BUCKET!
iPod : Alright then, but you will regret it!!!

Didn't the devs get ROLO working on iPod targets last week?
-
ROLO?

http://www.rockbox.org/twiki/bin/view/Main/RoLo
Basically, you should be able to just browse to your root folder and "play" an apple.ipod file to re-load the apple firmware.
It would also give you the opportunity to switch between official CVS builds and patched user builds (ie. Senab/Julius builds)
BUT... this is originally from other targets (Archos etc), and I only commented because I noticed the iPod RoLo mentioned on CVS activity last week.
~disappears to check out latest CVS~

The short answer is no. A CVS commit was made enabling Rolo for the ipods, but it doesn't succeed in loading anything apart from the currently running Rockbox version - I'm still working on it.
