Okay I am looking to get a media play specificly for RockBox with a colour screen for about £25 I am planing to get a Sansa c200 (I'll post an exact link when I get home).
My question is how do I tell if it is V2 or not? apantly V2 is not supported.
Also I heard the way to make RockBox work on the V2 player is just to go to the sansa site and replace the fermware with V1 then RockBox with run is this correct?
Sory about my spelling I'm at school at the moment and the key bourd I am using does not work properly and they do not use firefox so it does not check spelling as I type unlike my Ubuntu.

You can tell if a c200 or e200 is a v2 by looking for three things:
1) The packaging mentions Audible support,
2) The firmware is 03.XX.XX,
3) There's a very small "v2" printed on the bottom right corner on the back of the device.
Also, what you heard about getting a v2 to run Rockbox by downgrading the firmware is utter nonsense. The hardware inside the v2 is completely different to that of the v1. Therefore, a new port is needed to get Rockbox running on the v2 Sansas.

But only the second one is 100% reliable (the 03.XX.XX one). There have been cases of v1 packaging that mentions audible support, and at least some refurbished v1 players (maybe also new ones, not sure) have a back that metions v2.
This last issue might be the source of those downgrading rumors

I thought the downgrading thing was rubbish as if it was just a firmware thing then RockBox chould run any way.
I have not brought the player yet so unfortunately I can't check the bottom of it.
Here is a link to the Amazon page
http://www.amazon.co.uk/Sandisk-Sansa-c240-1Gb-Player/dp/B000IZKM0A/ref=wl_it_dp?ie=UTF8&coliid=I3L2M3GNPPIQTZ&colid=K1FJ952OWT8Z
I can't find mention of Audible support but that does not mean much.

Call me mad, but unless you buy a used one from Amazon, every new one will almost certainly be a v2.
eBay may be a better bet if you're looking for a v1 Sansa. Just ask a seller to look on the back for the "v2" mark, or read off the firmware version number for you.
-
What about the e200 then will all versions of that work with RockBox (it's a bit more but I'm sure my money will stretch a bit)
-
The e200 has the exact same issue as the c200. There are v1 and v2 versions of both.

Okay it may be time to do a bit of Ebaying but first I'll contact the seller on Amazon they are usualy quite helpful.

I got a new c240 v1 from a seller on Amazon not long ago. I was hoping for a v2, so if you get a v2 I'll happily do a straight swap with you.

So I assume that the player you received was a v1?

Yea I e-mailed them first to check and they said there where no V2 markings on it and they where correct so all is good.
