Title: Mini 2G fails to dual boot
Post by: MrKz on November 24, 2007, 11:26:41 AM
Hi every one, I've got a couple of tatty but functional Mini's I've been playing with. I've installed rockbox on one which runs fine. The problem seems to be that it will not boot back to the Apple firmware. I've formatted the drive twice (removed and placed in CF reader), gone through the install manually twice just to ensure I'm not making a mistake and everything go's on fine rock box wise but from that point forward the Apple side of things is screwed.

I've read that by dropping to the diagnoistic menu the device will switch to disk mode, this doesn't seem to be the case for my device. Disk mode works fine when in its standard Apple/windows mode when selected from iTunes.

The devices hardware version is 458754. (M9800)

Any ideas? Possible bug?  8-)

Thanks.

Diagnostic mode (accessed by holding Select+Left when booting) is not the same as disk mode (holding Select+Play while booting).

Oops! My bad  :D The diskmode access aside, this still doesn't quite explain why it doesn't dual boot, or are the two linked?

They shouldn't be linked no. How are you attempting to do the dual boot ?

On a freshly restored with nothing on it mini, I install Rockbox as per the instructions then "Menu+Select" to reboot. The spash screen comes up and away we go, Rockbox works fine AFAIK, no crashes or odd behavior.

Shutting down with the Long play press, turn on, switch on HOLD, the Apple sign appears, long pause, back light flashes, Apple sign and then nothing, the mini just sits there on the Apple logo and nothing ever happens, I've left it over night to be sure  ;D Switching the HOLD button off makes the Mini go straight to Rockbox.

I note on the instructions there is reference to an older bootloader version which requires the holding of MENU, I admit I've not tried that one.

I'm told that long menue still works with the new bootloader, the hold switch is an addition not instead of.

OK, reinstalled, tried the holding of the MENU on reboot and the same thing happens, i.e. not much. I can put it in disk mode to remove the bootloader now, which is handy.

Seems there must be a bug then? Is there anything I can do to share information on the unit which might help  8-)

If you remove the bootloader then does the Apple firmware boot properly?

Yep, removing the bootloader causes the mini to go straight to the Apple firmware with no problems  :'(

It would help if other users could corroborate that this also happens on their units.  I would say that you should go ahead and file a bug report (mention this forum topic if you like) and then post back here with the Flyspray number for the task.  This way other users who might experience this problem can easily add to the discussion here and find the Flyspray task.

MrKz,

Can you confirm which instructions you're following, and which program(s) you've downloaded to install the Rockbox bootloader?

This problem happened with an older release of the Rockbox bootloader, but has been fixed for months.  The current install instructions/download links are in the manual (see the link in the menu to the left of most pages on this website).

I certainly can  :)

I'm using instructions from the Rockbox website and the links contained within. The ipodpatcher is V2.0, the version of Rockbox I have on there currently is r15846-071129.

The hardware version from the debug menu is:

HW rev: 0x00070002
PP version: PP5022B

I've repeated the steps of installing a few times now, I'm fairly satisfied I'm doing it correctly, but you never know!

Possibly unrelated, but during operation of Rockbox, it can become slow and unresponsive to button presses, before leaping back into life shortly afterwards. I'm not sure how responsive RB is meant to be 8-)

I'll post a bug report soon, won't rush incase I've done something wrong :D

I posted a bug on flyspray and had it closed straight away as this was a "support" issue.  :'(

Thanks for that  :)

I've created a short video showing how rockbox performs, just so people can see it.

This has been fixed right?

I'm using the 3.1 release installed with the Rockbox Utility .

To boot to rockbox I hold Menu and Select and then release I as soon as it resets.

To boot to the Apple firmware I hold  Menu and  Select and then wait until the lcd back light flashes on and then release. I can also get it to boot to the Apple firmware by turning on the hold switch while its booting.

Is this the way it's suppose to work? My second gen Mini has been modded with a 16gb cf card; if that makes any difference.

The Nano and Mini are two different players. Are you sure you have a first generation Nano?
