Title: 1 TB SSD in iRiver H320
Post by: michaelbowe on July 22, 2014, 12:15:06 AM
Hi everyone.
I have had a 1 TB 840 EVO Samsung mSata SSD on order since late May, and for a number of reasons I couldn't get my hands on it until now. I can report that the H320 player I fitted it to works fine.

The only issue I've had is slow write speed - painfully slow. The iRiver power supply is probably at the limit with this card. The mSata clearly doesn't like operating through the mSata to ZIF adapter and even when fitted to an external USB adapter, it protests. I'm investigating options for configuring the card to improve write speed.

I've tried the ISD-300 UDMA USB utility but that doesn't improve write performance. Things get warm and the performance throttles back. Eventually it hangs. So my recommendation for those who want to go down this path is to get a separate USB 3.0 mSata adapter and transfer the bulk of any large file and directories using that.

The good news is that there is no issue with running this card in the player. It fires up and builds the database fine. Also there is no sign of it hanging when starting/pausing/stopping/changing music files. It starts quickly with Flac, MP3 and WAV files.

So overall, I'd rate this modification at 70%. If you absolutely have to have the biggest then this is what you want. Cost though is - ouch!

An update on this drive:

I initially formatted and set up the drive with Rockbox using an older Windows XP desktop. I was wondering if the iRiver would behave differently connected to a Windows 7 lap top.

I use a Robocopy batch file to update and maintain my music library and it was hanging on corrupted files which I couldn't then delete. I scanned the mSata drive a couple of times to ensure that any corrupted files were fixed and then deleted a couple of directories that had been "playing up". After that, I was able to run Robocopy smoothly and effectively. I introduced some additional directories and took some away to test the write/read/delete functionality. All good.

So it looks like the write speed issue I had was caused by a particular desktop having a problem with its USB ports. I would now have to rate this modification at 90%.

Could this be the largest capacity portable music player so far?

Hi All,

I have an H320 and I am hoping an SSD upgrade might improve the slight ticking I hear during silences when using the H100 remote.  What all do I need to make this mod?  I assume a ZIF adapter and the SSD, but if the player already is running Rockbox 3.13, the firmware is all ready to load Rockbox with the new SSD, right?  I just have to format the SSD to FAT32  and then install, then copy my music files to the SSD, right?  Am I missing anything?  Also, any difficulty getting the necessary parts in the US?

Thanks in advance,

Bob

If your remote has lcd that is the source of ticking, hdd change will not cure this.

Thanks for the heads up.  Is there any chance this tick issue is being worked on?  I know about the menu setting to reduce ticking but that doesn't solve it, as you're probably aware.  The development threads seem to be old and there doesn't seem to be a lot of H320 development going on these days.  I think I'll upgrade anyway just to get hopefully better battery life and some additional storage.

Basically you can't do much. The remote screen has to get the data to update its content somehow. The data are transferred through serial bus which, considering the length of the cable, has to cause interference. Spectrum spread (pseudo randomly  varying delays between bits) can help and I think this is what the 'reduce ticking' setting is doing. The only thing I can think of is changing the code to stop remote updates when engaging hold switch which from the other hand will defeat the whole purpose of remote with lcd.

Thanks again.  Do you mean disabling the remote when Hold is engaged, so in other words I'd have to toggle Hold on after doing some operation and toggle Hold off again to use the remote?  If so, that would be fine with me.  The ticking is pretty annoying because I can sometimes even hear it over quiet sections of a track.

[Edit]

Found my question answered elsewhere. Couldn't find a "delete button" for my initial post.

Sorry.

I just put a 1TB Toshiba m-sata in my iriver h320. I used an external usb 3.0 to transfer about 889 songs. after installing the ssd in the player i can never get the menu screen. it hangs at the Rockbox screen. Anybody got any idea why this happens? Too many files at once? should I format and start over or possibly remove some songs?
Any help would be appreciated.

You have to format SSD to FAT32 file system. Have you done it? If not do it. It is probably not possible in Windows, you have to use special utility. See RB wiki.

The number of files should not be a problem. Even ten times more should be OK.

Hi All,

trying to install a Samsung 860 Evo mSATA SSD in a iRiver H320. I installed the korean firmware version 1.31. Can anyone help me to get it to work?
I just can't get the player to recognize the SSD.

The Player always shows:

ATA error: -11
Insert USB cable and press a button.

or

No partition found.

Maybe I missed something?

from what I’ve read, the 850 and higher are not compatible with Rockbox for some odd reason. The last Samsung msata SSD that works is the 840. Try getting your hands on one of those and testing again.

Hi
As player say "Insert USB cable and press a button"
then remove cable. My start in this way...
Try to start with USB powering.

I've some iHPs with 128 and 256 GB mSata ssd's, but ONLY samsung 830 make the same attractions as Yours done.
LiteOn, Toshiba's Kingspec ssd works perfectly.
I start it with USB cable in USB transfer mode, then remove cable,
It's powering problem I think.
IHP's circuit can't draw so many current peek to properly starts SSD.
So i've got problem in copying files.
in the case of a large number of hue files Samsung crashes.
Edit:
It is PM830 but problem is - in a batterry.
Change baterry then problem has gone... hmmm
 And
I buy Samsung T5 1TB (like 850evo) and - yes! works great in iHP140
8 hour now, but works with any problems :)

Regards
Ja

ps.: I get 860evo 1T -no problems either - with new accu.
