Title: MPEG on Sansa c200(2gb-c250)???
Post by: charmed4good on January 04, 2008, 01:40:15 PM
today i installed the lastest RockBox firmware onto my c250 mp3 player and put a video in it which i specially converted to the LCD size(138x80) and 23.97 fps
when i played it a menu cme to me saying something like play from beginning, resume from 0:0 , quit mpeg player or something, and so i selected the "play from beginning option". As a result my screen went black and i kept hearing the sound of the video.......

how can i play the video succesffully.....since it is supported as per
http://www.rockbox.org/twiki/bin/view/Main/PluginMpegplayer#Supported_Targets
and

How did you convert the video?

Also, have a peek at the Mpegplayer (http://www.rockbox.org/twiki/bin/view/Main/PluginMpegplayer) wiki page for some tools and setting recommendations.

*edit* and i had looked at that page b4 but it doesnt say much a bout sansa or sansa c200 for that matter

Try using VLC instead. There's a batch file on that wiki you can easily edit to get the correct screen resolution for the c200.

Don't double post or post in caps. If you're a windows user, check this method out: http://www.rockbox.org/twiki/bin/view/Main/PluginMpegplayer#Using_WinFF_Windows_Linux

Painless and simple.

The c240's screen is 132x80, and set the FPS to 29.97.
Title: Re: MPEG on Sansa c200(2gb-c250)???
Post by: Llorean on January 14, 2008, 06:16:28 PM
Nah, don't set the fps to anything. Leave it the same FPS as the source file.

But do "-strict -1" without the quotes in the additional options box.

I figure that this is more of a bug in Rockbox for sansa c200's. I have noticed that Jewels and Star(two of the games) do this to the screen as well. It is probably an incorrect processor instruction that crashes the LCD driver.
Title: Re: MPEG on Sansa c200(2gb-c250)???
Post by: pixelma on January 15, 2008, 04:40:36 PM
siber_cat314,

if I understand correctly what you mean and what I see on my c200: this is not a bug and it is something entirely different from what the original poster describes. There is no crash in the lcd driver - it's just the backlight turning off and it will turn back on when you press a button. A few of the plugins, including jewels and star, simply don't keep the backlight on as others do (like mpegplayer for example) and just use your system wide backlight settings. This applies to all targets (with backlight).

You can discuss if it makes sense or not but if you want to do that - please start it in a new thread...

1) Please don't double post. The forum guidelines are posted in the Announcements forum, and the statement that they're heavily enforced here during registration was serious.

I have had no problems playing MPEG-2 video on my c200. Are you using an up to date build?

sorry for double posting

and if by build you mean firmware...then yes i am using the latest firmware

how do you convert your videos???

Can you post the version number of the build you are using?  The 'latest' build changes several times per day.

EDIT: I recently upgraded to r16132-080121 and still no change

if only you could give me clear instructions as to what resolution and frame rate i have to convert it to.....
Title: Re: MPEG on Sansa c200(2gb-c250)???
Post by: Llorean on January 21, 2008, 08:14:36 AM
You were already told exactly what resolution it needs, and frame rate shouldn't matter as long as it's a valid MPEG-2 frame rate.

You said this didn't work: Since they work for us, you're doing something else wrong too. Us telling you again that those resolutions and frame rates work perfectly fine isn't going to solve your problem, so I really don't understand why you're asking again.

As a simple and quick test you could try the widescreen version for the Ipod Mini of the elephantsdream sample video that's available from http://download.rockbox.org/mpeg/ (I mean the elephantsdream-q6-144x80-131kbps.mpg). Currently there is no version prepared which is exactly the c200's resolution but this one is close enough for testing and runs very well on my c250.

the screen went blank, i could hear the sounds, and the player had to be switched off.....

I am having the same problem for my c240. Would the Sansa firmware from Sandisk make a difference? Just as charmed4good posted, I hear audio but see no video... then it freezes... and then have to hold down the power button to restart. Llorean and pixelma says that theirs work but how come not ours... Odd? ???

Well, my C240 hasn't crashed while running videos. I just can't see what I am doing after I try to play one. But I usually give up before I get too far in, so I'll try playing through one of my movies.

I downloaded the "Elephants Dream" recommended above, to test alongside the two that I ran through WinFF (I think. It was one of the recommended tools, though). All three played fine in VLC (had to adjust the aspect ratio on mine), but the two I encoded are a garbled mess in Windows Media Player 11 (Sound was fine).
All three movies showed the same behavior in Rockbox: A solid black screen with the backlight on with the audio still working.

Well, my C240 hasn't crashed while running videos. I just can't see what I am doing after I try to play one.
So you mean it's the backlight turning off and it actually plays the video and you just can't see it? I can read the display without backlight in certain light conditions (e.g. holding a torch light on it).

Just an idea... there were changes in the backlight settings and how they are stored in the beginning of December, I had no problems with the transition but maybe you have. Could you try with a current build, reset your settings then play the video again?
Title: Re: MPEG on Sansa c200(2gb-c250)???
Post by: charmed4good on January 24, 2008, 09:18:17 PM
Well, i tried resetting the settings(with the current build) an tried to play it again. with the same disappointing results.

Well, let me try to explain it this way, you know the screen that comes for a very short interval of time, when you switch of your Sansa(which comes after the Shutting Down... message) it is that screen which we experience as soon as we play the file(after the initial start up screen)
So thereafter, the sound keeps playing and pressing any button does not make a difference...(you can pause it , rewind it, forward it, increase the volume of the audio), but you just cannot get back to the menu, all we can see is the blackish screen......
Title: Re: MPEG on Sansa c200(2gb-c250)???
Post by: siber_cat314 on January 24, 2008, 09:55:12 PM
Actually, you can even navigate the menus in Rockbox, if you know how the menus are set up. I've even gone back out of the mpegplayer, and played one of my music playlists. Rockbox still works, but the screen is stuck black, with the backlight still working correctly.
Title: Re: MPEG on Sansa c200(2gb-c250)???
Post by: charmed4good on January 24, 2008, 11:09:14 PM
Yes, that is true...i just realized
because when i pressed the record button, i could tell it went to the recording mode.......but the screen was all black

So that means that RockBox stays fully active, but the display does not come back.....

UGH!!! this is so frustrating, i mean, when its working for the other people, why can't it work for us???The player remains the same right???

Maybe its in the settings?? i mean Dithering, Limit FPS etc......the default on mine was-
ALL:OFF except Limit FPS which was on.........

I've tried all combinations, but still, maybe there could be something we are missing.....

Post by: siber_cat314 on January 26, 2008, 12:10:32 AM
Two things:
charmed4good, have you tried either jewels or star to see if the same black screen thing happens. Not to hijack the thread, mind you, but I've noticed the same behavior in these plugins as well.
Since it was suggested that, for some reason, the original (Sandisk) firmware might be to blame, my original firmware is 1.00.00A.
Title: Re: MPEG on Sansa c200(2gb-c250)???
Post by: charmed4good on January 26, 2008, 04:51:32 PM
Jewels:Ran perfectly on my c250
Star:Gave the same black screen exactly like the video problem

Sansa Firmware:01.01.00P

We may be getting somewhere......

I'm getting the same problem
so what could this mean? jewels and stars both don't run on my player

how can i fix this? i would be great if i could play videos on my player...i wouldn't have to buy a new one in that case..

Perhaps mpegplayer uses a processor command that is invalid on our players? I've looked over the source code, but I couldn't find anything in common for all three plugins.

As several of us have said, mpegplayer worked fine on our c200 players when we tested it.

Post by: siber_cat314 on January 31, 2008, 12:21:11 AM
I don't doubt you. It is just difficult for me to understand why mpegplayer doesn't work on mine while it works on anothers' c200. The only possibility I can muster is that there might be a defect, or worse, slightly different hardware, in our players that makes them behave differently.
Title: Re: MPEG on Sansa c200(2gb-c250)???
Post by: charmed4good on January 31, 2008, 09:19:36 AM
I don't really know about all these technical things
But I feel that RockBox should be universal in all the c200's...i mean how could it possibly depend on what the original firmware was?? unless of course a difference occurred while the RockBox firmware was being installed.......and that is only possible if the way of installing RockBox through each type of player is different which i am presuming it is not.....

It is remarkably difficult for a developer to fix an issue they do not experience.  However, we would of couse like to fix problems - have you opened a bug report on flyspray?  That is where most devs look.

Thanks a lot Mystic_Kitsune........looking forward to a genius solution from you!!

Lats night i was traveling in a bus. It was a 5 hour journey and i was reading Dice by T.N. Baker. According to routine, the lights were switched off. My cellphone battery died and the only way i could read was my mp3 player. In an attempt to get more light, i started increasing the contrast, as soon as it hit 128, the screen went black, just like it does when i try to play my videos.

I thought this could help, so i posted it.
Title: Re: MPEG on Sansa c200(2gb-c250)???
Post by: pixelma on February 15, 2008, 02:05:52 AM
I'm not sure though if fixing the contrast settings help with your original problem, but this is an interesting observation because those seem wrong to me on my c250 as well. Basically it looks like the settingslist is twice as long as it should be, ranging from 0-255 and the correct values would only range from 0-127 thus "starting a second time" at 128. I don't think that the mentioned plugins should be messing with the contrast settings but did you try if changing your contrast has any influence on the mpeg problem? Mine works well with the contrast set to "83" in case you want to have a starting point...
Title: Re: MPEG on Sansa c200(2gb-c250)???
Post by: charmed4good on February 15, 2008, 03:43:29 AM
you got me wrong........

why i posted that was because it has the same effect, maybe meaning that the error is caused because it is beyond the capacity of the player to display the video. In the sense, that maybe something in the video is maybe too high or too low(similar to the contrast setting) such that the display was not possible for the player.

you make perfect sense to me charmed4good.....but it cant be possible
maybe the displaying capacities of each player are different???

because as pixelma had earlier told us that she just downloaded the elephants dream video and it had played. She didnt reduce or increase anything in the video.

Ran across this old thread while scanning for other helpful bits, and thought others might like a link to a post I just added concerning converting videos for Sansa C200 players. (Newbs like me research all they can and glom onto old posts looking for hints.)

Check Sansa c240 c250 MPEGPlayer WinFF and VirtualDub (http://forums.rockbox.org/index.php?topic=18617.msg134792#msg134792) to see if any of that info might help someone.

Here's a Wiki page for PassinThru's post: http://www.rockbox.org/twiki/bin/view/Main/WinFFVirtualDub . Take your pick. ;D

Also, normally I simply use WinFF's Sansa e200 preset and change the screen dimensions to fit my c200. If I remember right, the c200's display is 132x80 (though you will likely want your videos smaller in one dimension to avoid stretching).
