Title: Help installing Rockbox in the M3
Post by: Ysl on July 08, 2008, 07:06:31 AM
Hello

I use my old M3 in the bathroom and would like to rockbox it (as I did on my X5)

I used the rockbox utility but when I swithc on the M3, it is still th original M3 firmware that is loaded, even if I deleted all .bin files in the FIRMWARE directory.

which files should be int the FIRMWARE directory ?

Is it a key combination to load rockbox ?

Is it possible to load rockbox as default firmware ?

Thanks for your help

The file that you need is cowon_m3.bin (http://www.rockbox.org/twiki/bin/viewfile/Main/IaudioBoot?rev=1;filename=cowon_m3.bin). Download this and copy it to the FIRMWARE directory.

Next, download the current build (http://build.rockbox.org/dist/build-iaudiom3/rockbox.zip) and unzip it to the root of the M3's hard drive. Perform a firmware upgrade, and enjoy Rockbox!

I already did that but what do you mean by "Perform a firmware upgrade" ?

In my firmware folder the is indeed the cowon_m3.bin and the .rockboox folder is also there in the root directory...

My problem is that when I switch on, it is the original cowan 1.34 that load

Thanks for replying !

The first bootloader installation process is basically the same on all Iaudios Rockbox currently runs on (so you should have done this on your X5 once already ;)).

Unfortunately the description in the IaudioBoot (http://www.rockbox.org/twiki/bin/view/Main/IaudioBoot) page in the wiki doesn't mention the M3 but it is still the same as on the X5 and M5... When the files are in the correct place you have to disconnect the player from USB and then insert the AC charger, the firmware upgrade should start and you'd have to let it do its job. For comparison reasons: this is almost identical to the official Cowon firmware update instructions (http://www.cowonglobal.com/zeroboard/view.php?id=B15&page=1&sn1=&divpage=1&bmenu=support&category=6&sn=off&ss=on&sc=on&keyword=firmware&select_arrange=headnum&bmenu=support&desc=asc&no=357&bmenu=support) just using Rockbox files of course.

I thought that the Rockbox Utility would lead you through those steps but never tried myself, will try to find out more.
