Title: Yet another microSD issue on c240
Post by: Chortishto on November 21, 2007, 12:37:23 AM
The microSD support for c200 series was announced in the 071107 build. Not sure if it really works though.

I've just Rockboxed my Sansa c240 with the latest (071120) build - and it still does not recognize my San Disk 6GB microSDHC card. The card never shows up as a in the File directory.

So, I'm really confused now: does the latest Rockbox c200 firmware indeed support microSD or the trouble is with 6GB cards only?

MicroSD support works with my c250 and my "normal" 1GB card but - I have to admit that I don't know of anyone trying a microSDHC in their Sansa c200. It was assumed to work because the c200 shares a lot of code with the e200 and SDHC cards work with the latter.

So, you fully insert the card and it's not showing up as a < microSD1>* directory at the top if you browse 'Files'? Do you notice a change in the disk activity symbol (rightmost one) in the status bar that you could relate to plugging/unplugging of the card? Do you have the possibility to test with a non-HC card?

That said, if the SDHC card support really doesn't work, then this needs some work of a developer probably someone with a microSDHC...

*) without the space, had to add it to make this show up in the forum at all

I didn't have a chance to test it with a non-HC card - so this is likely to be a HC-related issue.

When I insert the card - the disk activity symbol shows up - then disappears after a few seconds - but the Files directory remains unchanged - no sign of a < microSD1>.

Ok, this behaviour reminds me of the time after the first "microSD on c200 support" commit, where the card was detected but not usable yet as Rockbox wasn't able to read or write. When I plugged the microSD I saw a reaction in the statusbar but nothing more. Just for clarification, could you state the exact revision you are on (go to System > Rockbox info)?

Another thing you could look for is if Rockbox gets any info from your card, go to System > Debug > View disk info and then press "right". The headline should change from [microSD 0] (which is the internal memory) to [microSD 1]. In the worst case you'll see "Not Found!" there, in the best you'll get some information about the card and maybe it'll help someone with the right knowledge to get an idea where it gets stuck.

Finally I want to say, it's really hard to help or get to know more remotely and the forums might not be the best place for it. You could also - file a bug report, give as many details as you can (maybe answer the above) - or what I would imagine as easier - to get in contact with an interested developer in IRC (link in the left side menu has some details) because I don't know about a person besides you with a c200 and a microSDHC card.

Ok, I was gone for Thanksgiving and didn't have much chance to respond quickly.

My exact revision was 15654 though I also tried 15509, the first one that was built with microSD support

I checked the Debug info - it didn't show any signs of < microSD1>, only < microSD0>

I'm no longer able to play with this c240 since it was a relative's player and I took it only for a quick check if it supports my 6GB microSDHC card. I myself own a Sansa Express which seems more promising to use with HC cards - at least, it reads the card after a native firmware upgrade though with many glitches that are really annoying.

Thanks for answering :) , although it was not the answer I had hoped for...

It's a pity that you can't help out with testing anymore so we probably need to wait for another one with a c200 and a microSDHC.

If I can pick up a microSDHC card for dirt cheap, then I'll gladly test it out.

I have just installed the latest build of Rockbox on a Sansa c250 I purchased for a friends Christmas and microSD support works fine here with a SanDisk 4GB MicroSD HC card which I purchased for my own Sansa e280.

I have to say that apart from the Keymap which I am not quite sure about I rather like the c250 after installing rockbox, but the default firmware is a bit primitive.

For me the combo of a small flash player with a MicroSD slot and a radio makes for a very nice package.  As such I would recommend one to anyone looking for a small cheap flash based player to run Rockbox on.

I just tried a 8Gb micro SDHC card and I can proof that it works properly with the C250 using Rockbox version 15969-071223.

I think it may be a question of formatting. Some people have received MicroSDHC cards, had them not work, reformatted them, and then had them work. Unfortunately, they have not said (in my sight) what format they were before and after.

Mine is a Sandisk Micro SDHC and I used it just as I took it out from the box, no formatting was necesseary.

That doesn't mean that yours was formatted in an identical matter to say, a different brand that someone else received, though.

My sandisk 4GB card that works perfectly is fat32 formatted according to MS Windows XP Pro.

umm, folks, got a problem.

I have a sandisk 6GB microsdhc card that works fine except for...

with the card in my c250, if I then connect the usb cable to the computer, rockbox starts up and at certain point it stops and freezes. This does not occurr if the card is out.

Wonder if it just my card, my installation or a known problem.

Rockbox does not have a USB mode for the Sansas yet, so when you insert the cable it reboots to the Sansa firmware to do the file transfers.  The Sansa firmware does not support SDHC and therefore your 6 GB card.

You need to use an external card reader to copy files onto your card.

Thanks BigBambi for your response. I have been copying files into the microsdhc using an external usb adapter. The c250 plays my FLAC files contained in the microsdhc card with no problems.

The problem is when I try to recharge the batteries and insert the c250 cable into the computer. Normally, without the microsdhc card, the c250 will eventually boot into the OF. No problem. When the microsdhc card is in the player, the c250 will not boot into the OF, but freezes up.

So what I have been doing is one of two things:

A. After it freezes, I need to press the on/off button twice and it takes me right into the OF.

or

B. I keep the "<<" button pressed, and then connect the usb cable to the pc.

I really wished that I could just plug the usb cable into the pc without having to follow either A or B.

Note: I've discovered that my c250 does not really freeze, but takes a very long time for it to get into the OF when I connect the cable to the pc with the microsdhc card inside.

I've been using a C250 w/ an 8G microSD card, and it seems to be working pretty well.
