Hi All,
I recently had to format my iH140.
This seemed to go okay however I could not boot Rockbox afterwards although Rockbox bootloader started up. Is this because Rockbox is stored on the HDD?
So, player hung at bootloader screen ("Version 5, Batt: 4.09V"). Used a paperclip to reset and loaded original iriver firmware (V1.65)
This shows zero folders and zero songs although I did add some music files and folders.
Also only folder that does show has a name which looks like gibberish.
I have tried flashing an unpatched copy of firmware but this doesn't seem to do anything (I performed a "firmware upgrade" when running iriver firmware)
I have tried the rockbox utility to install / uninstall everything but seem to be going round in circles.
I have also trawled the forums and couldn't find anything that helped.
This is a bit of last resort so hope someone can help or point me in the direction of a post that I might have missed.

yes. That's the reason why you have to install two parts when installing Rockbox.

Sounds like filesystem errors. Did you safely disconnect / unmount your player after copying data to it?

This should fix the problem (assuming that you install the Rockbox build, not only the bootloader). If it does not please check the filesystem. The other symptoms you describe also indicate that there's something wrong with it.

Thanks for the replies.
The drive is formatted in NTFS.
I tried using the rockbox utility again last night to re install but still nothing.
The installation of rockbox seems to go okay and when I connect via USB I can see the rockbox folder with everything in it.
The main problems are 1) The rockbox bootloader starts but just hangs, does not run rockbox and 2) If I boot into original OS this starts up but will not find any music I have on the player.
If I remember rightly when navigating the file system in the original OS there is a folder called "Root"?
That folder has a name containing chinese type characters on my player.
Is there any way to get this "Root" folder back in the original OS?

I have exactly the same problem. First thought it was a HDD failure, so replaced the original HDD with a new one, but still the same problem.
My PC detects the HD, I can put files and folders on it, but the player still doesn't seem able to recognize the HD. Formated HD in FAT32, so that is not the problem.
Also not able to upgrade firmware, even if I copied it on the root: the player doesn't seem to detect the file.
Any thoughts ?

Here's a try:
my H120 worked fine until one day:
- the player itself stopped detecting data on the hard disk
- the player indicates 0 files, 0 folders, 0 bytes free
- the player does not find its root directory
- the player does not react to firmware upgrade
on the other hand, when connected to PC:
- PC recognises the player as external storage (with the right disk size)
- I am able to copy files and create directories on the drive
- I am able to copy firmware update to de root of the drive
As I first thought this was a hard disk problem, I replaced the hard disk.
After replacing and formating the hard disk in the right format, I still have the same situation: PC detects disk, player functions are working, but player seems unable to 'see' the HD ?
Any other information/details you would need to give an 'educated' response ?

How did you format the hard disk? I assume that the original firmware still starts up. It provides a format option, have you tried this? Is the hard disk formatted with a partition table or as "superfloppy"?

Where do I find this function ? If it is the 'Load default' in the General Settings menu: yes, tried it but doesn't change anything.
Also tried holding 'record' and pushing 'play' (saw somewhere else this should format), but that didn't work either...

It's somewhere in the menu (look for "format disk"). Can't tell you the exact name or location since I removed the Iriver firmware years ago.

There isn't a 'format disk' function in the menus (I checked the manual).
Only thing is the 'load default', which should initialize all settings to original factory settings.
I tried this option, but doesn't change anything.
Since my PC recognizes the disk, I guess this problem isn't caused by hardware ?
