Title: Unable to boot Ipod video 5G
Post by: crowley on May 01, 2008, 03:15:15 PM
Hi
I'm unable to boot my ipod at all. I've tested holding menu and center buttons and other combinations said in manual etc but nothing helps... its just keeps rebooting and loops... 50% of the times it starts loading rockbox... but exactly when the rockbox logo comes up you can see a usb-cable picture(this flashes by extremely fast) and it shuts down and you can hear the HDD head returning to its original position which makes a click...

I've havent been using my ipod much lately and it has run out of battery and thereforce(?) it doesn't boot... i have no idea why  ??? .. last time i used it was during last summer (yes i know its long time)... and i used it only for a week or so... Please note that i have an old rockbox version since i haven't used the ipod much in along time in general either :) but now i need it again so please help me to boot up my ipod. All help appreciated!!!

Right now im trying to charge the battery but it kind of charges for a minute or so but then tries to boot and loops there and the hdd clicks alot... im noit sure if this is  really healthy for the ipod?!?! so im not sure if i would continue with this?(im not charging throught my computer).. also my computer doesnt find the ipod...

r1839? That's decrepit!

You're asking for support for a version of Rockbox that's over two years old! The forum guidelines clearly state that you should be running a current build, or as current as you can get. We're well over 10,000 revisions ahead of you now.

Now for Eris' sake, update your bootloader and your build. The manual is here (http://download.rockbox.org/manual/rockbox-ipodvideo/rockbox-buildch2.html#x4-60002) for you to refer to. You should be able to at least put your iPod into Emergency Disk Mode (SELECT+PLAY on startup) to update everything.

Slow down, I'm pretty sure that number is wrong -- check r1839 (http://svn.rockbox.org/viewvc.cgi?view=rev&revision=1839) ;)

As far as I understood he has issues charging the player -- so this is not related to the bootloader, and until he manages to charge the player he won't be able to update (but please update afterwards ;) )

Once the player starts to boot, enter emergency disc mode by holding Menu + Play. The player won't leave this mode until you reset it; therefore you should be able charging just fine. After it charged you then can update your build and bootloader.

That 1839 actually means "18:39" or "6:39 PM" for those on a 12 hour clock. Back when we did CVS builds, we didn't have revision numbers, so we just had a date and time.

/me goes into the corner and sits on his stool

crowley, try Emergency Disk Mode. That will let you access the disk so you can finally update.

Thanks for the answer... well actually i already tried that ...and tried it again now but it doesnt go to any emergency mode (yes i remember what mode it is kindoff...) ... it just doesnt respond....  Maybe it helps if i film this and upload it to somewhere to show whats happening? :/

Disk mode happens before Rockbox code is run. Try it again, it'll usually work even with extremely low power, and if it's not working you're most likely just doing it wrong. But disk mode is entered by holding SELECT+PLAY, not MENU+PLAY as previously mentioned.

I would suggest doing it with the charge cable plugged in.

... which usually means "too late". On my Ipod I need to press (and hold) Select + Play immediately after switching on the Ipod, even before the backlight goes on. No idea how hard it is to figure that moment on a color Ipod ...

Edit: fixed wrong key combination I mentioned first :o Sorry for the confusion.

If it shows the text, you didn't do it right (probably not early enough). Showing us a video won't help, if you can get to that text, you can get to disk mode. Just keep trying.

Not exactly. Emergency disc mode has two major differences:
I hope this clears this up ...
