If I install manually and run ipodpatcher.exe it says successfull! Hmm! Then it says on my ipod 4gen greyscale: Error,Bad checksum. Insert firewirecabel or hold Menu+play to reboot??? I did not use the original cabel/ I used a usb cabel from a newer Ipod Classic! Could it be a cable problem??? See I have no ports on my laptop where I can connect the old cable. When I try using the Rockbox Utility it won't install the bootloader??? Happy for help on this!!!
-
You installed a build for the wrong ipod model.
-
I downloaded the rockbox-ipod4g.zip....unpacked it to my ipod 4gen. and then I run the ipodpatcher.exe and it said it was successfull....????
So which one shall I use+ an older version or?
-
Are you sure its a 4g? You could try downloading it again in case the download was corrupted, but usually this means that the user in question forgot which ipod they own . . .
-
I am sure it is 4gen grey! Could it be a cable thing?
-
What Ipod does Rockbox Utility detect when you run autodetection?
-
The message to insert firewire is only displayed in the bootloader on the 1st, 2nd and 3rd generation ipods - so you definitely do not have a 4th gen.
I _think_ that the 3rd gen was the first to have the dock connector, so if your iPod Classic cable works with it, then it's a 3rd gen.
Also, ipodpatcher should have displayed your ipod model before it installed the bootloader - run it again to check.
-
Thanks alot!!!! I was so sure it was a 4th gen as the guy who gave it to me said so...Sorry about that it is 3gen. And now I got Rockboxinstalled! But now my computer can't find it! It doesn't show up and no drive letter??? What to do? Really happy for all help on this!

Rockbox doesn't support USB on the 3rd generation iPod. Either use a Firewire cable, or reboot into the Apple firmware to use USB.
-
Thanks! Then I will need to get andaptor or another firewirecabel since my computer only have 4pol firewire ? Will it work then?

You already had the Ipod connected to your computer, did you? Use the same cable. If it's USB you need to boot into the Apple firmware first. See the manual (http://www.rockbox.org/manual.shtml) on how to do this. And *please* check the documentation first.

I connected with Apple firmware and then my computer did put my ipod on driveletter N:\ then I held down Menu and Play to reboot and the Ipod was gone. NO ipod on drive letter N:\! how to do this? Rockbox is properly installed. What to do? Same if I connect with Rockbox loaded....no ipod found?
-
Why did you reboot while your player was mounted to N:\? You should safely remove it to avoid file system corruption.
If you reboot your player while it's connected you shouldn't be surprised if the USB session is lost. As people have said, Rockbox doesn't have USB support for this player. You need to use Apple's firmware for USB sessions.
-
How do I do then to get Rockbox to work with it???? As it is supported! Without using usb and there is no firewireport on it! Or is it possible to use the ipods bottom connector and then to my firewireport on my laptop??
-
Use the original firmware for USB session. Transfer whatever you want to the player. Safely remove the iPod. Then reboot into Rockbox and use the files.
-
Then I need to use Itunes? Or another third part program?
-
Only if you want to. I think not having to use iTunes is one of the reasons a lot of people install Rockbox.
You can just open the iPod in Windows Explorer (e.g. navigate to it via My Computer) and drag and drop files to it if you want.
-
Yes I want to get away from Itunes! I had an Ipod Video with Rockbox and it worked like a charm! But this 3gen doesn't seem to work so good when I have to boot with apples firmware....How do I uninstall Rockbox bootlaoder when Windows can't find and asign a drive letter to i???
-
You don't need to use iTunes. Boot Apple's firmware, then just copy files over however you want, then safely remove the USB device, and reboot it to get back to Rockbox. It's just an extra step you have to use to get USB to work; you don't have to do anything else differently.

How do I uninstall Rockbox bootloader when my computer can't find it???
-
Use the Apple firmware or Emergency Disk Mode.
-

Which (surprise surprise!) is linked on our FAQ for the Ipod (http://www.rockbox.org/wiki/IpodFAQ#How_do_I_restore_my_broken_iPod_63) wiki page. Please read the documentation first.
