The rockbox firmware doesn't seem to be initializing the display properly. I'm getting a line on top of the screen that seems to be 1 or 2 pixels high, and the entire width of the screen. It even will leave the line there when rockbox boots the OF.bin
-
Ive had about the same problem once:
when loading the orginal firmware, vertical lines appeared from the top started to go down untill the bottom of the screen. The firmware never booted. Restarted the device by removing the battery (i didn't know then that it had a hardware shutdown fonction) and all was fine.
However I still see those lines on the top of the screen when i am booting the OF.
-
Yeah, I reported this on IRC when they first got the BL working but I was the only one. Now that it's supported it seems I'm not the only one. It's definitely part of the BL since it stays when you're in OF
-
That's odd: I have never had that problem.
We need to work out what is different between the working machines and the ones that have this problem.
First of all, could someone who is seeing this post up a photograph of the screen so I can see what we are talking about?
I'll raise a proper bug report for this tonight and post the link in this thread.
-
This is very odd... i took a screendump, and it took the dump without those 2 lines... however, it seems there are about 2 pixels cut off of the screen height at the top (look at the clock to tell).
The height of the screendump is fine, however.
[attachment deleted by admin, too old]
-
Nevermind, the screendump looks perfectly fine. It's just not outputting to the device properly... I'll take a shot with a camera when i get a chance.
Basically, there's like yellow or red dots (normally somewhere around the top-left). I notice that when holding down the power button to turn off, the dots add up one by one (about 10 of them) like a timer before it turns off.
-
Okay, so I took some screenies. It seems that the jumble on the first line changes as the Sansa boots up and does other tasks. It's a bunch of moving garble once you first get to the main Rockbox menu.
The images that end in c.JPG are cropped to just show the important part.

Yup, that's exactly what I'm getting.
-
Do the dots change while Rockbox or the original firmware is running? Or do they stay exactly where they are all the time?
-
The dots are there but don't change when running the OF.bin... however, when running rockbox, it changes often. Also, when shutting down rockbox, the dots seem to add up one by one across the screen from left to right :)

Here are some partial disassemble pics. Hopefully they'll be helpful.

Humm... looks like the model here: http://daniel.haxx.se/sansa/e200/pics/board2.jpg is different from mine as per the Ver #.
-
So what's the next step from here?
-
Hey just to let you know that I got the same problem with my cousin's unit. Unfortunately that's all I can say or help because I don't know how to code :(
I will check the unit's serial number to post it.
-
Latest Rockbox has different stuff at the top of the screen. Possibly due to the double buffering?
Let me know if pics would be helpful again. I don't have my camera on me at the moment.
-
I think pics of the board with the version info might be helpful
-
I've started a flyspry entry for this one http://www.rockbox.org/tracker/task/6896
It seems not to affect the e250 models and I can only vouch for the e250 and e260 series if anyone with any other models can either confirm or deny this bug exists on those models that would help.
I'll disassemble and scan in pictures of the e260 tomorrow if I have time so we can see if the ICs are very different from the e250s sandisk provided the rockbox team.
-
I can confirm that the E280 is having the problem, as mine is an E280 :)

this is not the bug in question this happens to me almost daily a hard power off and it boots fine again.
I think the "vertical line booting up freeze up bug" (can't think of a better name) comes from moving the scroll wheel while trying to press |<< with my big chubby fingers
-
Correct, this is a horizontal line bug :) 2-3 lines at the top of the screen going all the way across.
-
It turns out all three of the scanners I own are crap and produce blurry pictures. :o
So I broke out my web cam and took some snap shots of the ICs in my e260

Looks like it's a version 1.1 as well... there's another person on page 1 who had the problem and has a ver 1.1 board as well.
Daniel's kit that he got shows it's a ver 1.0 board. I'll open mine up at some point and verify that it's a 1.1 as well.
I'd like to see pics of a couple people who don't have the problem and check if the board is ver 1.0
-
I just opened mine up and it is a v1.1 as well.
-
at least one of the e250s we own are 1.0
that means the other one is 99.99% a ver. 1.0 ,they were bought at the same time.
These don't have the problems the e260 has.
-
Guys I'm so mad to be so useless to you.
Well with much tremble and fear I removed the first 4 screws and the serial numbers of my cousin's unit are:
BH0611NGF
e200B0611341142
I then removed the other 4 tiny metallic screws but was unable to separate the cover and I didn't want to brake something (remember this DAP is not mine).
Sorry that's all what I can do, hope it helps somehow. I upgraded to the current build but the line still gets displayed at the top.
-
If you did get the front cover off, the version number is at the bottem of the board below the wheel on the front side.
In big white letters i.e. "VER: 1.1 OSP"
If you do not feel comfortable opening any electrical device I suggest you DO NOT attempt it, but I would have never learned somuch if I had never made magic smoke from perfectly working devices. ;)

Don't confuse the hardware version 1.0 vs 1.1 with the model e260, as the e260 exist in both 1.0 and 1.1 versions.
I have an e260 1.0. Without line problem.
-
I have a ver 1.1 sansa E250 player and it has the same problem,it shows lines the first 2 row of pixels, but the second row is filled at the half, and when I boot up the original firmware it shows only less than half the first row,but the sansa still fine even it have rows of unused pixels,it just need more refinement, all are doing a great job, thanks for rockbox.
-
I have the same problem on my E260.
The only thing I can add is that when I play .mov in original firmware (after booting into it with rockbox bootloader) the screen "fixes" itself while the movie is playing. When the movie ends, the problem returns.
-
I thing that the video takes the whole screen and it unconsciously fixes that, and then it again shows the unused pixels, the thing is that is something unconscious,it might be the bootloader that takes that rows of pixels,so the problem as I think reside in the bootloader, the OF.bin file reamins intact,so is bootloader trouble.
-
I have the e280 and I have this weird line at the top of the screen as well.
-
As far as I can tell, the problem is caused by the two lines of the frame after what is visible on screen (which contain rubbish as they are not used) being wrapped back round to the top of the screen.
Bearing this in mind I have written a patch (ID # 7438) that extends the frame buffer below the screen and writes the first two lines into it. That way the first two lines get written back over themselves.
Not very elegant but until we can figure out a genuine solution this at least covers the line up in Rockbox (not in the OF though interestingly).
Please test it though. I only have one European model E280.
-
Wow nice hack! ;D Both patches work flawlessly. No more annoying screen glitches.
Charles
-
I'll check this out and see if we can come up with a solution which works for all Sansas. Unfortunately I don't have one of the models that has this problem, so it might take a lot of trial and error.

Thanks for looking into it, dan_a.

Thanks for the patch. Tried it on my e280, which has the lines issue, using the 20070714 daily (the newer ones spit out an error about not finding sysfont.h during compile - on their own, that is, not because of the patch).
It worked. The first two lines now display what should be there, including when viewing images and playing games. One thing it didn't completely work with is mpegplayer - the first two lines are black. Better than the garbage that was there before, though.

Strange, my videos are filling up the whole screen.

I have the problem as well. e260.
EDIT:
My Sansa in the normal firmware already has a couple of black lines built into the normal firmware. Those lines appear to be exactly where the Rockboxs firmware create the pixels. Can anyone else confirm this?
-
tsolless, are you saying you get this in the original firmware without the Rockbox bootloader installed?
I just uninstalled the Rockbox bootloader from my e280 and started the original firmware, and didn't see rows of black/garbage pixels at the top of the screen. You sure it's not just the gap between the display and chassis you're noticing, which is slightly larger at the top? The black rows of pixels will be distinguishable from that by their slightly backlit appearance.
-
No... Look. I apologize for the quality, I'll try to take a picture with my digital later but for now...
See that small area where the white line is above the song number? That is the line of pixels I'm talking about. I just want to know if anyone who has the garbage pixels has that.
As compared to that. As said apologies for the quality.
-
Was the top picture taken without the Rockbox bootloader installed on your machine?
-
No it isn't. I guess that would affect it. I'll try it out later and see what it does.
-
I have posted a patch to fix this FS#7692.
make sure you rebuild rockbox and bootloader.
-
Very nicely done. I see that patch has been commited to the SVN. Nicely done.
-
Could somebody that knows what theyre doing (i.e. not me ;) ) update the sansapatcher.exe linked to from the manual (http://"http://download.rockbox.org/manual/rockbox-sansae200/rockbox-buildch2.html#x4-120002.2.4") to use the fixed bootloader?
If you do i will send you a lovely pie.
[Edit: too late - i ate the pie, sorry. Can somebody please fix it anyway though?]
-
dial up will not allow me to see most of this forum (h8 you dial up and country area) so i will offer my help whether it be answered or not.
i found a patch known as the m build. it has various little mods to it that i found very useful, it also corrects the blue and red dots and lines that appear at the top of the screen.
http://forums.rockbox.org/index.php?PHPSESSID=a862a6023663b49676d44f28&topic=10956.45
the mod also has album art patches to it for those of you who want to install AA GUIs into their sansa.

The real fix for the lines has been fixed in SVN, so Matt's patch can be removed ;) At one point I had dialup too - that was fun.
-
Fixed exe (the windows one anyway) seems to be up now. Thanks to whoever built it - it works great, no more screen glitch!
IOU one pie.
-
Now we have a problem.
the v0.2 sansapatcher causes this glitch, but the new one
v0.3 with the fix breaks booting the OF.
Is there a version that doesn't have either problem?
(where is the source for sansapatcher? IS it in the big .bz2 file
with the rockbox sources?)

I'm not sure if sansapatcher is included in the source tarball or not - you're better getting it from svn.

Not until it is fixed. For now you can use my bootloader:
http://www.anythingbutipod.com/forum/showthread.php?p=145608#post145608
and one of my builds:
http://www.anythingbutipod.com/forum/showthread.php?t=12583
which contains the 2 patches mentioned in this thread.

The patch is already included in the official build... Please don't recommend unsupported builds to users as an alternative to a proper solution to the problem (using an official bootloader with a working edition of Sansapatcher, as it's not the bootloader that's the problem, I believe).
We really, and I mean *really* do not need people advertising their unsupported builds in various threads. All discussion of them should stay in their forum exclusively.

I am only recommended it because I am not too sure of the state of the current version of the bootloader. We have had many threads of people unable to boot into the OF and have to hunt down and revert back to version 0.2. Judging by the date (Sept. 16 and 22) of the most recent one on download.rockbox.org, it looks like it still haven't been updated. Correct me if I am wrong.
Charles
-
If a working one must be compiled, recommend they do so. If there is no working one, recommend they either use the previous one, or work on solving the problem.
But please, don't advertise your unsupported build, ESPECIALLY without clear disclaimers as to the fact that it's not supported and may not function in the same way as the official version.
There was no reason at all to recommend your build here at all, as it's only the bootloader that's the problem in the first place.

I shall refrain from doing so from now on.

The only reason why I recommended it is because the OP wants something that is working right now and the work around that I am using comes in 2 parts (one for the bootloader and one for the firmware):
http://www.rockbox.org/tracker/task/7438?histring=7438
Charles

And if you LOOK at that task, it's fixed in SVN.
