Title: iAudio x5: Rockbox USB mode broken
Post by: Malcohol on February 01, 2007, 12:03:28 PM

The Rockbox USB mode on my X5L has been broken since October.
This isn't a crisis as the original firmware's USB mode works fine.

I've logged the bug, with details, here:

http://www.rockbox.org/tracker/task/6590

The reason I'm posting is that the change that introduced the
bug for me was logged as "iAudio X5: USB mode working again".
That's weird!

Can other X5 owners tell me if Rockbox's USB mode is currently
working? Can you remember if it worked before October 18th
2006?

Thanks,

Malcolm.

I have noticed this issue exactly as you described at least since the January 3rd build. USB works fine when X5 is off, but when Rockbox is loaded, the USB picture shows up but the player is not detected by Windows XP.

I am on the case.

USB mode works fine here with a 070129 build and Gentoo Linux.

USB mode works fine here with a 070129 build and Gentoo Linux.

I second that. Svn; r12209M-070205, also Gentoo Linux.

Edit; completed version as reported by "info" and splashscreen.

I'm sorry, but SVN isn't dated like that. It uses revision numbers. If you're using a daily build, state the daily build date, but if you're using an SVN build, please state the revision number so people actually know what build you're talking about. There can be 20+ builds in a 24-hour range if it's been an active day.

I just updated to the latest daily build r12210-070206 for the x5 and the USB issue is still the same as before. The rockbox USB picture comes up when the cable is plugged into the subpack but the drive is not detected in windows XP. When I turn off the player and plug in the USB cable so the native firmware USB mode starts, the player is detected instantly by Windows.

Maybe I should be a little clearer. When I said "I am on the case", I really meant:

"Yes, I can confirm that there is a bug, and I am working on a fix".

Would that be a specific windows issue?

No. It's the same under GNU/Linux.

No. It's the same under GNU/Linux.

Some distributions of GNU/Linux, since Gentoo seems to be unaffected.

Svn; r12209M-070205, now tested on windows xp sp2 - works just fine.

Please note that details of this bug are logged at the bug tracker here:

http://www.rockbox.org/tracker/task/6590

The problem is not to do with the computer or OS I'm connecting to. As stated at the bug tracker, I can modify the Rockbox source to fix the bug. What I don't understand is why it's broken for me, but not for others.

Let's complicate things a bit.

Before i thought USB mode is not availables in RockBox at all and relied on original firmware bootstrap for it, same as for charging.

But some weeks ago i suddenly discovered that RockBox can act as USB drive! (Pity it can't act like USB speakers, IMHO that could be killer thing. Play muic from X5 onto X5 :-) )

So, for me - it works, and it seemed (but i ain't sure, i'm a very newb to RB) to start working at about the time fix was into SVN. Still works.

X50 60Gb, purchased about last spring (i remember X5L/20 were in shops but X5L/30 were not), can put my s/n but don't think it counts.
OSes are WinNT 5.1, 5.2 don't remember of 98SE/ 5.0 / Linux (i guess i did not attached it), though can check them.
HW is i855GM (notebook) for 5.2, SiS 761 for 5.2.

BTW, it seems to me, that when on USB mode, Rockbox can't be turned off without prior unpluggin or resetting.

Is it so, or i just didn't tried hard enough? :-)

To mee it seems like a bug.

I'd say that's the way it works. That's the way it works in the original firmware or rather, you switch between charge and diskmode - but you can't turn it off.

in original fw i could turn it of when on USB, then X5 turned off and re-turned on with... erghmmm... cowon original bootloafer (or how to call it?) took care of USB data and charging instead of full fw.

I want the same for Rockbox, so it could turn the device off and then let it boot again into c.o.b.

Imagine due to some hardware/software bug Rockbox thinks it is USB-connected when it is no more already. Reset ? and if i do not have pin ?
Or perhaps i just upgraded RB and do want it to clean-boot instead of being mixture of RAM-loaded old files and on-disk new files ?

I think Rockbox is to allow shutting down when on USB.
It is not serious bug, but rather than time for implementation - i see no reasons to avoid it.

Yes you are right, i wasn't thinking of the orignal firmware usbmode - i thought you meant the charge/usbmode... Sorry for that.

I always have a pin with me since i'm running beta software on my x5 - even though it's very very seldom used... (I had it when i didn't use rockbox aswell since cowons firmware was/is less stable than rockbox.)

no, i know that RockBox as it is now does know nothing about charging and bear with it.

I do have pin too
i have some old OGG files, perhaps encoded with some beta of libvorbis, and they make original FW hang dead.
some daily builds of X5 were quite unstable to me too about and randomly hanged (about month ago)
sometimes i chance to run ASF/WMA under RB and it really to some crazy idea tries to launch it - and sound output track hangs completely, and sometimes RB hangs too and cannot be rebooted in normal fashion :-)

But having choice between hardware reset and graceful shutdown - i'd prefer the last.
After all FAT32 is not Reiser and can be easily damaged and i have no single idea what could Rockbos do if once will be launched on corrupt FAT :-)

(On of thing terrified me in orginal FW were freezes, when i copied files from iAudio M5 via USB OtG :-) )

My x5 shuts down after i've used the original firmware's usbmode, just tested it - sure glad that rockbox doesn't.

You mean, when You did not X5 to turn off, just unplugged it and it inexpectedly turned off ?

saw that a couple of times. but quite rare. Say, about 5-10% of times i unplugged it.

Guess some random bug with FW. I did not searched for testcase and, just out of my mind, had no idea what could trigger it. Unplugging software before hardware ? file transfers ? it all seemed to have no difference.
Just sometimes it inexpectedly shutdown, while most time not.
Perhaps it really crashed and that shutting down was like BSOD/kernel panic ? Dunno.

However ability for user to intentionally shutdown rockbox hile on USB IMHO would be good thing :-)
