Title: Can't download my bootloader
Post by: darrellm2005rockets on February 23, 2008, 01:17:42 PM
I also posted this in the general discussion area, I want an answer quickly. This firmware is trying my patience. I have not been able to download the bootlaoder on this site, I have only been able to get it through the rockbox utility. However, the utility sucks, because, even though it says that the bootloader got loaded, it is not showing up in the System directory of my player half the time, and when it does, it still doesn't work!. When I try to download the bootloader from the site, it takes me to a page with a bunch of weird writing and little green dots. Please help

Irrelevant.  Do not cross post.  I have deleted your other post.

Bootloader for which player?  What are you trying to download?  I can't guess what you mean, details are important.

Edit:  i have also just deleted your other post in this forum, as a) I couldn't understand it and b) the bits I could understand duplicated this.  Please try to explain in simple, clear steps, with exact information.

So please give some details.  What have you tried to do (exactly).  What have you clicked on?  What did you try to tun?  What was the result?  What were the error messages?  We are not psychic.

Neither am i. i edited the original post to make it a little more detailed. I don't get any error messages, it just never works! Wait, I take that back. After installing the bootloader and firmware, I unplug my player, and when I turn it on, it says :system files missing".

Please specify EXACTLY what you have done.

As I said in your other thread (which got deleted) the file is OF.mi4, NOT M14. This makes a huge difference.

Okay, here it is. About 2 hours ago now, I went to rockbox.org. I opened the manual in one tab, and followed the instructions EXACTLY. After extracting the current build to the root directory on my player, I clicked the link to download the bootloader. When I clicked that, it took me to a page with a whole bunch of gibberish and little green dots (maybe the gibberish was computer codes, I don't know). So I stopped, and started to despair. I then remembered about the rock box utility. I thought I was saved! I deleted thhe firmware I had manually installed, then  I downloaded the utility, it detected my player, and I clicked on the small/simple/whatever the heck it is called installation. the progress window opened, and it did its' thing. Now, when it got to the part about the firmware itself, it said "encountered download error http404 or something like that.  I thought, okay, and looked at my players root directory. The Rockbox file was there, but it only had one thing in it. The bootloader installed fine though. So I unplugged my player, and all I got was "system files missing, use the firmware recovery tool on iriver.com blah blah blah" So I followed the uninstall method outlined in the manual. I then tried the same thing again. I read how to install the bootloader and firmware seperately using the utility, and tried that. Same results. I have tried every combination of those three methods I can imagine, with the same terrible, disheartening results. Now the only thig I haven't done is do the whole thing manually, because i cannot download the darn bootloader. That's is everything. If you are able to, maybe you could download the bootloader and attch it in an email to me? Or, if you know what I have done wrong, please enlighten me.
And I know that the file is mi4, not m14. that was just a typo in that other thread.

Right click on the link for the bootloader and select save as.

The manual tells you what to do with the bootloader binary. You must not run it (as it is not a windows application).

Installation

   1. Download http://download.rockbox.org/bootloader/iriver/H10_20GC.mi4
   2. Connect your H10 to the computer using UMS mode and the UMS trick.
   3. Rename the H10_20GC.mi4 file to OF.mi4 in the System directory on your H10.

Note: You should keep a safe backup of this file for use if you ever wish to switch back to the Iriver firmware.

Note: If you cannot see the System directory, you will need to make sure your operating system is configured to show hidden files and directories.
   4. Copy the H10_20GC.mi4 file you downloaded to the System directory on your player.

I have the 5gb version bigbambi. And after following the instructions, it still DOES NOT work. I need this to work.

Fine.

  1.  Download
          * http://download.rockbox.org/bootloader/iriver/H10.mi4 if your player is UMS or
          * http://download.rockbox.org/bootloader/iriver/H10_5GB-MTP/H10.mi4 if it is MTP.
   2. Connect your H10 to the computer using UMS mode and the UMS trick if necessary.
   3. Rename the H10.mi4 file to OF.mi4 in the System directory on your H10.

Note: If you have a Pure model H10 (which does not have a FM radio) it is possible that this file will be called H10EMP.mi4 instead. If so, rename the H10.mi4 you downloaded in step 1 to H10EMP.mi4.

Note: You should keep a safe backup of this file for use if you ever wish to switch back to the Iriver firmware.

Note: If you cannot see the System directory, you will need to make sure your operating system is configured to show hidden files and directories.
   4. Copy the H10.mi4 (or H10EMP.mi4 if you have a H10 Pure) file you downloaded to the System directory on your player.

I JUST DID THAT!!!!!!! I am now going through the whole process again. If it doesn't work this time, I am really screwed.

"It does not work" is really an absolutely bad error report and we can't help you in any way if you don't tell more details. For example, there are two versions of the 5GB around which require different bootloaders. And the bootloader BigBambi linked in the first place is for the 20GB version, not for the 5GB.

You also didn't tell any details about the problems with Rockbox Utility. It should be able to do everything for you, but it requires a working network access -- you might need to adjust the proxy settings. And make sure you have the most recent version as that fixes a few bugs. Posting the exact error message also help greatly.

In any case, unless you really tell us the detailed error messages we can't help you. How about writing each step down as you are doing it and posting exactly this including the exact error messages that occur? And adding some patience usually helps too. Including to not scream.

Again sorry. I just deleted all the rockbox stuff off of my h10 again, and yet again tried the full installation using the utility. I got this rockbox bootloader version r12862: 1866
iriver H10 5/6gb
st650211fx
Partition 0: 0x0B 476
Loading Rockbox........
Can't load rockbox.mi4
File not found
Can't load rockbox.h10
file not found.

It is worth noting on the right hand side of the screen it seems as if there is more to each line, maybe one character, but it s cut off.

The message "can't load rockbox.h10" indicates that you do not have a Rockbox build on the player.  You said that you deleted everything Rockbox-related from the player, so you will need to repeat the step that you did earlier regarding downloading a current build and extracting it to the root of your player.

I'll have to defer to someone more familiar with the H10 on the "can't load rockbox.mi4" message.

Post by: bluebrother on February 23, 2008, 03:15:10 PM
Ok, so you are seeing the bootup screen of the bootloader. It looks for the firmware file, which is contained in a folder called .rockbox (note the leading dot) in the root folder of your player (i.e., if your player has the drive letter f: assigned by windows that folder is f:\.rockbox). Did Rockbox Utility gave you an error during installation? Apparently Complete Install didn't work as expected (which is noted as an issue in the wiki page, the "Installation" tab install works fine).

You need to download and extract the Rockbox build (from http://build.rockbox.org) and extract it to your player. The downloaded zip file contains the required folder structure, so just extract it to the player (extract to / f:). Alternatively you could also use the "Installation" tab in Rockbox Utility and then use the "Install Rockbox" button. This will only install the build and leave the bootloader alone (which is already working).

Edit: IIRC the bootloader checks for the firmware file in h10 and mi4 format. Current builds use the mi4 format, so that's the reason it fails on two files. If I'm wrong remembering about this someone please correct me ;)

should I delete the folder in my system directory before I try installing the firmware again?

I'm not sure what folder in your system directory you're referring to, but installation of the firmware doesn't involve the system directory, so no.

That shouldn't be in your system directory.  As bluebrother explained earlier, it should be in the root.  If that folder is in your system directory, you've extracted it to the wrong place, and yes, you can delete it.

Haven't you used the manual for installation (like you said earlier)? There is a download version of the manual, and if you carefully look at Rockbox Utility you'll notice a tab labelled "Manual" ... :o

 ::)

I you mean "root," then say "root."  Don't say "system" when you mean "root," because as you know from the prior posts in this thread, the system directory is a specific directory on your player which is very different from the root.  When you are careless with your language, it makes it difficult for us to help you and gets very frustrating.  Imagine you were asking someone for driving directions, and they said, "go to the intersection, and turn left."  After you drive around lost for an hour, you return and they say, "oh, I said 'left,' but I meant 'right."
