Title: Rockbox boots incredibly slow...
Post by: GGGGGG on April 29, 2010, 03:24:28 PM
Well, I've been using Rockbox on a Sansa e200 for a couple of years and 'recently' switched to a Fuze. I put Rockbox on it when it was still in beta. It booted immediately (Rockbox splash screen showed up for a split second, then I was able to start browsing my files, etc). But, after every new build I install, it seems like it gets slower every time... This morning, it took me 5 minutes to turn it on. Compared to the split second it used to be, this made me worried. And that's why I came here. I'm now using the latest current build.

If "five minutes" is a real time period and not exaggeration, something is probably wrong with your player.

Nope, definitely not an exaggeration.

I tried it again just now and it took 1 minute. It also takes almost half a minute to shut it down.

The OF works as it should though, which makes me think the problem here really is with Rockbox.

What SVN revision is installed, and are you using the default settings?

Is SVN revision this: r25750-100428?

I wasn't using the default settings, but I just tried resetting them and it didn't help.

Oh, and if possible, could you (or someone else) maybe give me (one of) the beta builds to install?

There's no such thing as "beta builds." The current SVN revision is the current state of the code. Otherwise, there may occasionally be test builds in the test build forum (generally if something changes an established thing, or could break things worse and so shouldn't be in SVN quite yet).

You might want to update to the latest build to verify your problem still exists (we ask that you be using the latest possible SVN when asking about a problem) but there are other Fuze users without this problem, so it suggests something unique to your situation/hardware.

@Overlord Nathan:

Are you using fuzev1 or v2?  If you come on irc right now we can probably look at this a bit easier.

Okay then, it's called a test build, but it comes down to the same thing.

Anyways, isn't that the latest build I'm using? I just updated it yesterday...

Oh, I'm using a v1 (I didn't know the v2 was Rockboxable too?)

As I said, the test builds are only in existence when there's something that can't be done in SVN - almost all development happens in SVN, and the latest bleeding edge build (updated automatically every time the code is changed) is what you want. If a "test" build existed, it would openly be available in that section of the forum. There would never be a need to ask for it.

Note the automatic updates - if there has been any code change that affects your player (or all players, via the apps layer) since you got your build, it's no longer the latest. Even if you got it yesterday.

Okay, I'll try it out now, it might take a while though because there's a bunch of music on it and the OF's Database Refreshing takes ages to finish.

I've got a v1 I'm updating right now, give me a few minutes.

Are you using a uSD?

Nope, no microSD, I know that makes it slower. :)

EDIT: I'm going to try removing everything related to Rockbox, even the bootloader and just start off clean again.

Ok, I'm running r25758 and it appears to operate normally for me.

I would recommend checking your file system with fsck or chkdisk depending on whether you're using linux or windows.

I'm still uninstalling, then I'll have to reinstall it, I'll post my results tomorrow. If it still doesn't work, I'll do a chkdisk as you suggested (yes, unfortunately I'm using Windows :()

EDIT: Well, doing a clean install made it boot in 10 seconds, but that's still not near the split second from the early test build (when Rockbox wasn't officially supported yet). If someone can figure out why, please tell me, otherwise I won't bother you anymore. I should've probably tried doing the clean install first... Oh well, it's fixed now, so I can't complain. Thanks for your help! :)
