Title: Ford Sync Capability
Post by: Asect on May 02, 2017, 02:06:41 PM
New to Rockbox and the Forum.  Although this item has been addressed in past threads, albeit some years ago, is Rockbox ever going to work with the Ford Sync System?  A 2017 Ford Explorer with Ford Sync will not recognize Rockbox on an iPod Classic(6G).  I'm aware the iPod Classic 160GB is not necessarily a Rockbox supported device, but I must say the install is easy utilizing the provided instructions and everything seems to function very well.  The message when connected to the Ford Sync is "USB Device Not Recognized".  After searching the forum and not finding a whole lot addressing the topic, just thought I would ask.  Thanks for any input.

The Apple specific stuff is all cryptographically verified to keep out counterfeit devices, so its unlikely that anything third party will ever work on that.

Its possible you could get USB mass storage working with the head unit (so that the device treated your Ipod as a USB thumb drive) if you changed the USB PID so that it didn't recognize it as an iPod, and assuming the head unit is capable of working with normal USB devices.

How would one go about changing the USB PID?  I rebuilt the iPod with a 500GB Flash Drive and everything works perfectly running Rockbox from computer, stereo system, syncing with MediaMonkey, etc.  Of course iTunes will not recognize the 500GB, but running Rockbox all other mediums do recognize the 500GB.  The only item that will not work is Ford Sync recognition.  If this could be tackled, the 500GB iPod would be perfect.  Thanks for the response.

Well, I looked at this thread and downloaded a bunch of Virtual Machines and Oracle stuff and whatever.....I'm not a programmer and this stuff is based for software engineering...not for the layman.  I cannot even figure out how any of this stuff opens and operates.  When you click on it, it does nothing.  Thanks anyway.

Okay....I've tried really hard with this and would like some help in using the Rockbox Device Build virtual machine.  I can get the  machine to open now, but only in a guest mode.  The Rockbox build will download, but none of the other commands work...get errors from all of them.  Also, once the Rockbox build downloads, how do you view the source code?  It doesn't open in the terminal window.  Same note, how would you make changes if you can't view the code?  Also, the compiler does not work as listed in the notes for compiling.  Is there somewhere with a step by step process for getting this done?  I mean really, is the Rockbox program only for those familiar with Ubuntu and Linux?  I can't believe this is so difficult.

I think the compiled builds in this thread may work for you:

What do I do with them?

It's a compiled build, i.e. the thing you were trying to make with virtual box. You can unzip it to your player and see if changing the USB id helps or not.

Saratoga...just to be clear, all I need to do is unzip this file and replace the current "Rockbox" folder on my iPod?  Thanks for all of your patience by the way.  I really appreciate it.

Well...this worked!  Unzipped the file to the iPod and replaced the "original" Rockbox folder, and the device indexed right away with the Ford Sync.  Plays and sounds great!  Appreciate all that helped with this request, including the linked past forums!

Hi there. I'm having the same issue as Asect, with going from a car with an aux mp3 jack, to a Ford Sync enabled car with USB only.  The Rockbox partition on my Ipod video 5.5 gen, now only get's "USB device not detected" errors, both when plugging in or plugging in while holding a button to bypass multimedia settings.  When connecting while booted to the itunes partition, the ipod DOES sync up with the car and I can play my outdated itunes music.

I'm guessing I need a compiled build with modified numbers, similar to the 6th gen one you provided in this thread.  Is there a way to get one for the ipod 5.5 gen enhanced version?  I really miss the ease of Rockbox and the drag n drop of files.  Thanks!
