Title: Rockbox 3.13 released!
Post by: AlexP on March 08, 2013, 09:36:19 AM
Hello all,

On behalf of the Rockbox developers, I'm very pleased to announce that Rockbox 3.13 has just been released!

Go here to download the installer (individual zips are also available):

         http://www.rockbox.org/download/

Read up on the most noticeable changes in 3.13:

         http://www.rockbox.org/wiki/ReleaseNotes313

Unfortunately the Nano 2g isn't included in this release, but Rockbox Utility will offer to install either 3.10 or the latest development build for you.

And above all, enjoy!

Alex

just installed this version to my ipod mini 1st gen which i bought for the task. I paid about £10 for the ipod and another £3 for a battery. now listening to 24/96 flac and it works without a problem. the wolfson dac supports this so in theory it should not be a problem but very satisfying all the same. tried some listening tests again my fiio x3 and its really good. Next is a CF card conversion but I think I need a gen 2 for that.

Well done guys this is very clever stuff.

I guess its me as i didn't read the manual but when i disconnect from my pc it scrambles the letters on the screen.  Any ideas?

Will there ever be a 4.14?

3.14 you mean? Well, I've suggested a pi easter egg for that release... :)
Or 4.0, since it's been such a long time since the last release.

:-\   There used to be a release every few months... I hope this project isn't dead.  Been waiting patiently to install in on my iPod classic 6g.

This project is not dead. In fact, it's far from it. Here's a list of all the commits since last release (a LONG time ago): http://www.rockbox.org/since-release.html
It's just that no one really feels like doing a release now.

BTW, Rockbox runs perfectly fine (with the exception of DOOM, which needs a little patch) on the Classic. The "unstable" classification is really only because of the complicated install process, nothing else.

Glad to hear. Thought it's dead.
Maybe it's about time to set a signal...  ;)

It's possible a 3.14 version? Just to overcome the unlucky figure. ;D (oh, boy, ugly smilies...)

Given the long time since the last release, and the huge list of new features added since then (see http://www.rockbox.org/wiki/MajorChanges), I think 4.0 is the appropriate version number for the next release.

Dev build works perfectly on a cheap refurb Clip+ I just picked up. I'd forgotten about this project, I used to have a iPod Mini many years ago.

I wonder if there will be a resurgence of small DAPs (and by association Rockbox) with the ever increasing size of smartphones. They're getting too unwieldy for running or the gym. Anyway, excuse my rambling, just wanted to give my thanks and give a +1 for a 4.0 stable build.

Hi there,

SanDisk just released their new Sasa Clip Jam. Are their any plans to make a compatible version of rockbox for it? Your team has made the best mp3 player firmware I've ever seen. Please keep it coming.

Since development since to have hit a plateau -- no updates in weeks -- why not realize the current version as 3.14?

It's getting there.
A release isn't really that different from a dev build, but it gives some users the promise of increased stability, which might not always be the case.
In fact, the current dev builds are supposedly more stable than the release builds on some targets.
For this reason, along with the long list of changes since the last release (see http://www.rockbox.org/wiki/MajorChanges), I think a release should be done.

A stable release port "runs well ... has a complete manual and is supported by the installer." https://www.rockbox.org/ (though currently there's some shortfall).

A development build is "generated from actively developed source, at times they may be buggy or even unusable." https://build.rockbox.org/

Could you please stop nitpicking? The current release is almost four years old and horrendously out of date. There have been nearly 2,000 commits since then... There's literally no reason to keep using 3.13.

If the difference between a dev build and release were a mere nit, you've got to wonder why the dev build hasn't made it to release.

And seems to be making no progress towards one. Despite the 2,000 commits and four years you mention.

There's literally no reason to keep using 3.13.c

Evidently you have no reason to use the latest release. Users who prefer "a stable release port that runs well ... has a complete manual and is supported by the installer" may do.

That isn't what the link says. Stable ports are ports we consider mature.  Nothing to do with releases.

Can we please stop wasting developers time here? If not that thread should get locked imo.

Stable ports are ports we consider mature.

Stable means a lot more than that. "In Rockbox, the term "stable" means that a port has the following parts completed... (https://archive.is/aqKmi#selection-327.1-327.82)"

Nothing to do with releases.

Sure it is to do with releases. If a port is unstable, it is excluded from the release e.g. "Unfortunately we've had to drop the Ipod Nano 2g from the list for now due to serious issues with USB. We hope to add it in a later release" (https://archive.is/iWhIz#selection-613.1-613.140)

Can we please stop wasting developers time here?

No-one's wasting developer time. If a developer thinks replying is not worth his time, then he need not reply.

That link you posted explains why you were mistaken. Releases and stable ports are different things. A port can be made stable if it meets those criteria. A release is an old build prior to the current one. It is a mistake to confuse the two.

And yes you are wasting everyone's time. The wiki clearly explains this stuff. I know because I wrote it. If you don't take the time to understand it, you should not be posting about it.

This argument is pointless. I'm locking this thread.
