I did everything right and i know it. When it comes up, i put the switch to hold and it says Loading Original Firmware...... Then resets itself. I can load rockbox fine but not the Apple OS. Any suggestions?

This appears to be a known issue with some iPods; see
http://forums.rockbox.org/index.php?topic=8610.msg67293#msg67293
.
I'm still trying to find out if there is a proper solution; the old bootloader doesn't handle some things properly (specifically, the kernel_on_cop patch requires the new one).
Hopefully this caveat will be added to the manual, as well.

This bug is proving harder to isolate than I hoped (i.e. I haven't a clue what's wrong...). So yes, the note from the IpodInstallationBeta page should be added to the manual as well.
I've added the problem to the bug tracker, it would be helpful if users with a 4G greyscale or mini could perform the tests mentioned on that task:

I fixed it. Here is what I did. All i did was restore my ipod using itunes....reinstalled rockbox and both rockbox and the apple os work fine now! If other people are having the same problem try this.

I am now unable to boot my original firmware on my
Fat32 IPOD 60 Gig Video 5G
. Not entirely sure when this problem started - its been a while since I wanted to watch Videos. I initially thought that the issue may have been bootloader related, so I downloaded the latest from the Ipod manual links and used the Mac IPOD patcher app to install it. Still no success.
Ive also noticed that I get regular system freezes. This seems to happen when i start playing a directory of tracks and switch the unit into HOLD. Whats really weird is that It doesn't seem to freeze if I exit the WPS and HOLD it on the main menu or file browser screens.
I am now considering reverting back to the original firmware bootpartition... Any ideas?
Oh, I forgot, does the restore function wipe the contents of the pod? Im in the process of doing a backup anyway, but it would help if I didnt have to copy all the tracks back on again.

How are you trying to boot the original firmware, and what happens when you do?
Earlier versions (0.6 I think) of ipodpatcher had a bug which would have caused problems if you had tried to upgrade an existing bootloader, but that's fixed now.
You should just need to restore your original firmware partition, and then install the bootloader with the latest ipodpatcher.
(the above applies to the 5g - the bugs with the 4g greyscale and minis still exist)

Hi,
I have read about the new fix with the ipod bootloader:
http://build.rockbox.org/cvsmod/chlog-20070221T214512Z.html
Does it mean that my iPod mini (2G) now works with the new installation method? (Then I will test it soon.) Or is it still a problem at the ipodpatcher.exe?
Sorry, but I'm confused...

No, that bugfix just related to the new work-in-progress Rockbox GUI installer/updater utility (rbutil - Rockbox Utility) - as you can see by the filename of the file that that change applied to.
The problems with the 4g and mini still remain, but are being worked on.

Is it possible to give a short status report!? It seems that the flyspray won't be updated...
Or can I help to speed up the process?

Can mini 1st/2nd gen and 4g grayscale users try the following ipodpatcher (Windows version)?
http://www.davechapman.f2s.com/rockbox/ipodpatcher-0.9-win32.zip
Note that this version of the bootloader (which if it works will be the next release) doesn't display any messages on the screen unless an error has occurred.
Just unzip it, and double-click on the extracted ipodpatcher.exe. You'll be prompted if you want to install the bootloader.
Then boot with the hold switch turned on and let me know if the Apple firmware starts. If so, also test with the latest Rockbox Current Build and let me know if audio playback is working.
Thanks.
EDIT: Here's a Mac OS X version -
http://www.davechapman.f2s.com/rockbox/ipodpatcher-0.9-dmg
and Linux -

4g grayscale, ipodpatcher 0.9, latest svn (r12645)
Boots into Apple with the hold switch set.
Rockbox boots just fine, and plays music!
OS Stacks confirms most tasts are running on the main processor; main and codec are running on the coprocessor.
[incidently, I see that boost_counter is set to 3 on boot; I thought it was only supposed to be 0 or 1 in normal operation? Is that from DirCache / database scanning? After a while, it drops to 0, and then fluctuates between 0 and 1]
All hail Dave Chapman!

The odd thing is that I didn't fix the bug - I made some unrelated changes and then someone reported it had started to load the Apple firmware again...
Results from Mini users would be welcome.

Wow, what an easy installation now.
GREAT!!
iPod mini 2G
Apple OS: works
rockbox (r12648): works, too
music on rockbox: oh yeah
BUT: When I'm in rockbox and plug in my iPod to the USB, then the USB logo appears and after that the iPod shuts down (and I must reboot them - Menu+Select). I have to start the Apple OS to fill it with files.
Any ideas?
