Will installing Rockbox delete my mp3 files?
« on: March 08, 2007, 07:39:36 PM »
I have a gigabeat f-40 which I've been using as a hard drive (just to store my mp3 files). If I install rockbox, will it delete the existing files or will it recognize them without me having to transfer all of my music back to it?

Thanks

Rockbox will not require reformatting of the disk or anything else. Any files you have there, outside of the one file it's required to replace for the Rockbox install and the few files it's required to add, will remain exactly as they were before the install started.

However, Rockbox won't be able to play any of the files already on your gigabeat - they're encrypted.

Well, if he's been using it as an HD to store actual .mp3 files, it'll play them. If he's been using the Gigabeat software to transfer them, so they've become .sat files, he won't be able to without converting them back.

Well, from his original post:

I'd say they were not converted to .sat, but who knows

While I assume people actually type what they mean, I'm never willing to bet against the fact that someone might have meant something other than what they wrote means.

Thanks everyone for your help - that's exactly what I needed to know.

The files are not encrypted, I've been using the gigabeat as a hard drive to store my mp3 files (in their normal .mp3 format), when I take my player to work, etc...I just choose my library via iTunes or WMP and go from there.

GodEater - Llorean got it right (kudos to you) :)
