MP3 file from downpour.com won't play on 3.14

Hi all!
I've been using Rockbox for years on several different players and love it.
but...
yesterday I bought an audiobook from Downpour.com (I buy quite a few of them) and this one has a problem I've never seen before: it is a zip file containing a pile of MP3 files. the first MP3 file won't play on my rockbox player. it just sits there showing zero elapsed time, zero time remaining.if I click the player's "next file" button it immediately starts playing file #2.
other players play it: vlc, videos (on Linux), hover the mouse over the icon and it also plays. But not in Rockbox.
I ran mp3val and mpck both report nothing wrong with the file.
I can recode it by importing/exporting into/out of Audacity and the resulting exported mp3 plays in Rockbox.
Anybody got a clue?
Thanks in advance!
I can provide the file if any of the devs wants to see it (but it shouldn't be distributed, being copyrighted and all).

Probably just a corrupted mp3 file. You can try rewriting the stream with foobar2000 or another tool.

As I originally mentioned, I tested it with two tools that allegedly diagnose defective MP3 files and they didn't report anything wrong.
I also found that opening and exporting with Audacity "fixes" it.
so I was wondering if perhaps it uses some construct that Rockbox doesn't handle well.

Transcoding it with audacity is lossy, so I would try just rewriting the stream, which is lossless, first.
The decoder is libmad +10 years of patches do it's pretty robust against minor problems, but things like corrupted album art can prevent parsing if they're severe enough.

Could maybe just try removing any embedded art (if it has any) with something like mp3tag? Though rewriting with foobar is also a good idea.
Seems entirely possible that Rockbox might be more sensitive to some minor error than are other players or even those 'mp3 checkers' you refer to.

I'm not familiar with foobar (except as an expression).
I see it is a windows program. I have it sort-of working in wine on ubuntu, though I managed to crash it once.
Its help doesn't tell how one does a rewrite and I don't see it anywhere in any of the dropdown menus, so can someone enlighten me?
So, I used ffmpeg to rewrite the file using the "-codec copy" option and got a file that takes up nearly 3 times as much disk space. I don't think doing that recodes the file, so I'm at a loss as to why an 11 mb file is now 29 mb.

Drag and drop the file into the playlist, right click on it, select utilities/rebuild mp3 stream.

sigh. following those instructions foobar does seem to do something, but it ends just with the popup disappearing and no note as to whether it succeeded or not. the file I asked it to update remains the same size and timestamp (and md5sum) and I don't find a new copy of it anywhere else, so I can't tell that it actually wrote to disk.

There are lots of other tools that can rewrite an mp3 stream, if foobar doesn't work well on linux, you could try a native tool instead.

I had an audiobook (possibly corrupt) which had a wildly incorrect duration and it made things a pain to try and listen to it.
In the past what worked for me was rewriting the stream with ffmpeg.
A quick google gives me this for *nix:
https://askubuntu.com/questions/248811/how-can-i-fix-incorrect-mp3-duration
Failing that, email the website you purchased the audiobook from and ask them for a checksum of the mp3 file - or alert them that the file is damaged etc. - fix the problem upstream

Try Rockbox 3.15 /release-candidate/f72b908/. Fixed my problems with unplayable Songs. Rockbox 3.14 was the only Version wich disappointed me. 3.15 looks promising.
