Clip Zip 'Please insert disk into USB drive' prompt after working fine previousl

Bought Sandisk Clip Zip 5 years ago, installed Rockbox, loved it (went back and forth b/w Mac and Windows easily). Battery going, bit the bullet, bought another one few days ago (at 4x price I originally paid). Windows only these days, installed Rockbox, 32GB SD card (as with first player), loaded music, podcasts, etc onto both. Worked swimmingly for a day, same as previous player. Earlier today, added few more files and was about to eject when it suddenly stopped recognizing both, saying card had to be formatted and, for Clip Disk drive: 'Please insert disk into USB drive'.
Ejected both, noticed SD card was no longer recognized by player but otherwise, when not connected, everything worked as before - Rockbox and files were there, the latter playing fine. Ejected SD card, tried Zip in two other USB ports, along with other connectors, and got same message ('Please insert disk into USB drive'). Restarted computer, same thing.
Tried looking under devices and, when connected, it's recognized as Sansa Clip Zip, but not in file explorer (except as 'USB Drive E'). Curious? Very frustrated. Had been sole bright spot in a bad bad week.
Help, please. (Perhaps obvious note: I'm not the most technically proficient member on this board.)

What version of Rockbox do you have installed?
Did you try the SD card in a dedicated reader to see if it is corrupted or dead?
next I'd try without putting the SDcard into the CliZip and plugging on a different pc to see if it is recognized

Version 3.14. Windows 10.
Tried SD card (which was the one I'd been using for a year in the previous player, and which worked well in new player for a day) in old player and was prompted to format it. So it's either dead or needs reformatting. Happy to chuck it and get new one - more concerned about new player.
Tried new player elsewhere (sand card) and same thing as before - registers as 'USB Drive (E)', then prompts 'Please insert disk into USB drive'. Otherwise, it works fine as a player when not connected (incidentally, inserted other SD cards into it and all are recognized and files therein work fine).

There have been some updates to the backend of the sd driver since 3.14 but I've yet to see any behavior described on either 3.14 or the latest dev versions with the clipzip but being Windows 10 it wouldn't surprise me if your OS was the issue whatever you do DO NOT LET WINDOWS FORMAT THE DEVICE!
how does the SANSA firmware behave?

AH you know what I have seen something like that before on a clip+ that had the card detect contact bridged when I tried to replace the socket unfortunately I killed the whole thing when I desoldered and resoldered it so I'd recommend you just leave it alone and use a card reader because it is a fiddly piece with tiny pitch
Just in case that isn't it try on a windows xp, 7, 8 OS and see if it still happens

Again, don’t care about the card, can always be replaced or, as noted, accessed via card reader. Wondering what to do about the player itself.
Did go into Disk Management and saw that the file system was listed as RAW. Anyone have any experience with this particular problem? Wouldn’t think I should follow thenormal protocol for an external hard drive that’s gone RAW. Also, again, it works fine when not connected, plays files, etc. I’m baffled and frustrated.

Also worth noting re. SD cards, I’ve put other cards in and all are recognized by the computer and I can even transfer files over safely. But it still doesn’t recognize the Sandisk player itself.

If the sansa firmware is acting the same way and it isn't an issue of the card detect pin being stuck it is probably a case of corrupted internal flash which is pretty unlikely on a new player but I suppose possible is this a 4gb or a 8 gb unit?
If it is a 4gb ClipZip I have an image of the drive and I can run you through the process to restore the drive if you want to go that route but I would rather you just use a card reader to write songs to a SD card and use the DAP like that if at all possible because the process is not without risk

8GB. And, if this were the case, would it have initially worked well with pc (recognized by it as ‘Sansa Clip Zip’, on and off, for more than 24 hours), as well as still be working (I turn it on, Rockbox is as it should be and all my files are there and play fine) outside of now *not* being recognized as ‘Sansa Clip Zip’ by pc?
But no, nothing to do with any sd card, which again, when inserted in player and then pc, seems to come up fine.
Again, problem is, when I connect Clip Zip to pc, it continues to come up ‘USB Drive (E)’, followed by the prompt 'Please insert disk into USB drive'.
(I do appreciate the kind offer, by the way.)

If the player still works then that leads me to believe that it is the fault of windows 10 but I couldn't say for 100% without a dump of the Internal flash.
I don't have a full image for the 8gb clipzip that would allow you to use windows to restore it you would need a Linux pc (or raspi) but first try it on a different (not windows 10) pc to rule out the OS..
I think you misunderstood what the card detect pin is.. It is a tiny switch inside the DAP SD socket that closes when the card is in and allows the device to detect the card being inserted/removed.
Also you haven't answered yet.. do the original sansa firmware and rockbox both malfunction with the same insert usb message in windows?

Original player comes up as it should, as it always has. Back to using that one, though again, it’s on its last leg. Should note that old player’s Rockbox version is 3.13, while the new one is 3.14.
Ended up finding this, which reads quite close to what happened to me:
http://forums.sandisk.com/t5/Sansa-Clip-Sansa-Clip/New-Clip-File-system-RAW-problem-please-assist/td-p/106932
Minus Rockbox and the fact that mine worked for over 24 hours before the random prompts and wiping of 32gb card.
