Dual-Booting
« on: July 13, 2006, 08:36:29 PM »
I really want to stick a copy of rockbox on my nano for all of the apps it runs and the promising virtual keyboard feature, but I have one, very large issue - I love the iPod's music and photo interface. Is there any way to dual-boot my iPod?

Yes, the Rockbox bootloader can dual boot. When you turn it on, you hold Menu down to load the Apple software instead of Rockbox.

Bear in mind, Rockbox's *purpose* is to be a better music player, and it far outstrips the capabilities of the retail software anyway.

Yea, but maybe he wants to listen to music in the AppleOS because of the battery life. Rockbox is great though appsaloutly better than the appleOS.

But Lorean i got a question. I think i should search the forums first but since your the quickest to answer. I got a question:
Can you change the default boot settings, like instead of booting into the rockbox as default, change it to the appleos?

Thank You + take Care,
Jon

The boot settings can only be changed by recompiling the bootloader. You'll need to know a bit of C to change it (its a REALLY easy change though.)

Or you can use the iPodLinux Loader2, as it lets you pick a default with a config file.

And if your going with the ipodlinux bootloader (version i really like) ;D then you shouldn't worry about the installation. If you need any help on the installation i'll be more than glad to help you but a little heads up: the installation is the same as the rockbox installation. OR you can download one of there installation programs based on the OS platform you have, and install the bootloader that way(prefer, cause it''s easier).

Take Care,
Jon
