monoid: michaelbowe: Nice that the 256GB SSD worked for you with standard install, as most info I've read indicates standard install only works with 128GB or smaller HDs.
To Nmatheis: I've just reinstalled a 512 GB Toshiba mSata card back into my H140. Reason being that it stopped working. Having just read your post I thought about it for a while and decided to reformat and reinstall rockbox with a small number of flac files. It works fine and I'm still running a standard install. So it looks like the standard install will work with larger cards BUT only up to about 128 GB. That's not very useful, of course, but I thought I would clarify.

monoid: So you flashed 7pre4 but left original iRiver bootloader in place - correct? Any weird issues with 7pre4 I should be aware of, or is it stable?

Not exactly.

I flashed bootloader 7pre4 and left original iRiver firmware in place. (So, I flashed only RB bootloader with OF and did not use the option to flash RB bootloader and RB software.)

I have no problem with 7pre4 firmware.

Hi Everyone,
I'm new here and have tried to make an iRiver iHP-120 into a 1TB using the parts from the first posts in this thread. When I reset the iRiver i get the stock firmware. (I think that may be normal). But when I turn the thing on with the on button i get an error -11 and it asks me to plug in a USB. Also there are two little posts inside that stick up that hold the original HDD in place. These will not allow the Ribbon Cable to seat properly. (I can hold it in place for experimentation though). What has everyone been doing with those? Cut them off?
I did flash the original unit with Pre7, then I copied the .Rockbox folder to the SSD (everything on the original, in fact). then I replaced the HDD with the SSD and this is as far as it got. What did I miss? Do I need to reinstall Rockbox on SSD?
Can some kind soul please post a step by step for the dummies out here?
Thanks

Which bootloader do you use? You mentioned Pre7...

I use unoffitial 7pre4 bootloader. When I tried the one that had camed (2 years ago) with RB instalation (e.g. last official bootloader), I'd got ATA -11 two of three cases. After flashing by 7pre4 things started to work well.

I have 120 GB SSD disk. But it is 50 pin IDE, so no reduction was needed.

Thanks for the reply.
Yes it is 7pre4, I just forgot the correct name in my OP. do you know what the deal is with the two little posts that the HDD inserts into? I would not like to cut them off in case I need to revert to the hdd again. perhaps I'll shave off a little from the connector to make it fit.
So, here's what I did. I installed rockbox on the unit before doing anything. then I flashed it with 7pre4. then I copied the Hdd contents to a folder on my pc. then copied that information back to the 1TB SSD using an SSD to USB adapter. Then I put the SSD and connector into the iRiver. It would not fit properly due to those posts I mentioned but I could hold it in place.
I think that is the right sequence isn't it? I will try to get the ZIF to IED adapter to fit properly next and try again.
Thanks for your input.

Success,
After filing down two little tabs on the sides of the ide to ZIF cable I was able to get the cable to fit and after copying the original HDD contents including the .rockbox folder the iRiver 1TB seems to function properly. Now to the task of organizing 90,000+songs and audiobooks. :o
Thanks for your input.

I have since attempted to put the 1 TB SSD into an iRiver h320. Much prettier screens. After two days of copying over 800 songs i put the SSD back into the iRiver and booted it up. Got to Rockbox just fine but it has not shown the menu screen yet. Is it normal for it to take a long time to sort through that much data before going to the menu? I will leave it plugged into power today to see if it ever finishes booting up. Any one else have similar experiences?

Got my H115 booted up with a 256GB SD card via a compact flash adapter.

Here's the card:  http://www.amazon.com/PNY-Elite-Performance-256GB-Speed/dp/B00FF90EZM/ref=sr_1_2?ie=UTF8&qid=1444263477&sr=8-2&keywords=256+gb

Here's the CF adapter:  http://www.amazon.com/Eye-Fi-Compact-Adapter-Professional-Digital/dp/B001DKO7R8/ref=sr_1_9?ie=UTF8&qid=1444263557&sr=8-9&keywords=compact+flash+reader+sd

Plus the standard adapter to attach a cf card to the player.

Using the standard rockbox install (version 6 bootloader) I could use up to 128GB of the card just fine.  If I went over 128GB it became really finicky and would lock up / not allow any more files to copy over.  After installing the 7pre4 bootloader and flashing to both RAM and ROM it appears to be working fine.  Currently have 140GB on it, been playing it most of the day with no issues.

Hello everyone,
I know, I'm a little late in the discussion but I just did the ihp-120 with the mSata 1TB (Samsung 850 EVO) upgrade and I'm getting the infamous error: -11 nine time out of ten when I boot RB. So I thought maybe I could find help here.

I'm running 7-pre4 bootloader and the RB 3.13. I also removed  the little tabs on the sides of the ide to ZIF cable.

When I put back the original drive it shows batt 4.06V. And I still use the original battery.

You can see how it looks in the attached picture.

Anybody?

Hi Spaz,
I'm afraid that there is only bad news. I tried getting a Samsung 850 EVO 1TB mSata card to work in an iRiver H300 series player for Koolman. I have previously had success with the Samsung 840 EVO on both the H100 and H300 series players. The 850 EVO would not cooperate in the player at all. I have also had the same experience with a recent Toshiba 500GB mSata card too. It seems that some of the latest generation cards have some particular issue that I was not able to resolve. I can only recommend that you try to find an older 840 EVO card.

Happy hunting.

I did find a 840evo 1tb on ebay and it did work on the ihp120, sweet!  ;D
I have some ticking problems(that I lowered with the remote display settings) but thats for another thread  ;)

Ps. If any of you guys find a solution for the 850evo please let us know!

Cheers!

Thanks for the info on the not working 850 EVO mSATA SSD!

I have the 840 EVO mod running since a few years now but in the end of March this year my ssd died. So I rma-ed it. I was told they had no 840s anymore and I would get a 850 as replacement. So I was happy. But when the package arrived there was an 840 inside, so I was sad.

Now, reading that the 850 would have not worked - and I wouldn't have thought of that for sure - I'm happy again and glad I didn't get a 850 as replacement!

Next time my ssd dies I have to pray they still have 840s left... :-)

@JaroMi
The T5 Samsung is an external storage drive with USB 3 connection. How did you manage to fit it inside the H140 case ( the T5 measures 2.91" x 2.26" x 0.41") and how did you connect it to the male IDE connector from a USB socket?

Samsung PM830 256G is another external drive in a 2.5" format. It has a SATA 111 connector. How can this be recommended when it won't fit inside an H140 or H340 iRiver?
