Thought I would post a note here for anyone coming down same path and having set up issues with an e200 r.
I was followed the instructions from
http://www.rockbox.org/wiki/SansaE200RInstallation,
but had a load of hurt trying to get the security patcher to work. I would get the Sansa unit into Mfgr Mode, easily 'nuff.
I would even get drivers installed (via device mgr). Yet the patcher program would fail with error messages suggesting it
couldn't find the attached unit.
It turns out the issue was with 64 bit Win 7. I'm not sure about other windows versions, but it turns out this flavor just
won't load un-signed drivers. It's an over zealous safety measure to prevent nasties from getting installed. And the provided alternate driver is not signed! So, no loaded driver = an executable that can't talk with the device. And just to confuse the issue, windows wasn't exactly clear about the problem. It would see and show the alternate driver in place (but would flag it with a yellow icon). It would also open a folder on the device, making me think there was proper connectivity.
Searching shows a couple of different solutions (command line loading flags and Group Policy edit for example). I tried those, but they didn't work. I know there is a way to add a sig after the fact, but that seemed like way too much work. Ultimately what worked for me was re-starting the matching using the F8 boot menu to select the mode that disables driver signing. And since I don't expect to be using this patcher again..it shouldn't be an issue when i boot normally next time.
Maybe some kind Rockbox silverback might alter the instructions on the page to reflect the driver singing issue?
Thanks..
