Cannot open Rockbox Utility Archive on Win7 64
« on: June 10, 2011, 04:46:26 AM »
Hi,

Have downloaded the utility installer, but cannot open the archive.

Winrar says "unexpected end of archive", 7-zip says "cannot open as an archive", Win7 zip also cannot open the archive.

Is this due to running 64bit Windows 7?

Any help would be much appreciated.

Regards,

LG

No, your download is probably incomplete/corrupt. Clear your browser cache and try again.

Hi,

Ok, have tried clearing browser cache, and have also tried downloading on another machine (Win 7 64bit Home Premium) with the same error message.

Ok, have tried clearing browser cache, and have also tried downloading on another machine (Win 7 64bit Home Premium) with the same error message.

Then that other machine is broken as well. It might be a good idea to use a machine with a different system (i.e. not W7 and / or 64bit) to check first. This pretty much sounds like some antivirus program "fixes" the archive in some way, and that antivirus is installed on both machines. Or both machines use the same network and there's something strange going on with that network -- maybe a proxy caching the broken file.

Seriously, the file extracts fine for me (though I don't have W7 64bit) so the problem is not at the Rockbox end. We really cannot support problems with your OS / network / unzip tool.

Maybe it's a good idea to publish a checksum, so that anybody can verify if the download was OK.

This should be feasible with the RB Utility as there are not so many versions of it and they change not that often.

MD5 perhaps.

Maybe it's a good idea to publish a checksum, so that anybody can verify if the download was OK.

That's a bit pointless.

While it's definitely not a problem to do this (the build script in fact does also calculate the md5 sum of the created file) there are two problems:
1. Windows doesn't provide a means to calculate the md5 sum (or sha1 or whatever hash is used) so you need to get some program to do that separately.
2. the zip file format hashes the data (it does this for each file that is compressed separately so you can extract files from an archive that aren't corrupted), so if the downloaded archive is corrupt the unzip tool should tell you. Unless that unzip tool ignores those hashes.

So I really don't see anything gained here. If the unzip tool messes things up providing hashes for the download file won't help.
