30G IPOD Video *PANIC* Error
« on: August 13, 2008, 05:24:58 PM »
I have an Ipod 30g Video and I have been enjoying Rockbox on it.  All was fine until I put on about 800 more songs (total of 4300 songs).  Now whenever I try to build a database and reboot it freezes on COmmit 3/9 and gives me:

*PANIC*
Dir Entry 6 in sec
tor 4 is not free!
01 00 80 E2

The only way that I can get it to boot up is to reboot the Ipod in it's native OS, plug into USB, delete all the database_.tcd's and it will load up past the splash screen and let me play music but it does NOT have a database.  I have noticed that now I have a bunch of funky file names and folder names in my .rockbox folder... Such names as:

0áπ└▐Σ.apl at 3.5GB
 at 3.7GB
so on and so forth ( these folers and files are NOT deletable)..

I hope I don;t have to do a reinstall and put 4300+ music files BACK on just to see it do this again?  Any ideas?

TO ANYONE THAT HAS THIS PROBLEM--------  It seems as if database.ignore MUST NTO be deleted ( if you are deleting your other DB files to reboot in RB).. Doing so on my Ipod made it lock up on 3/9 commit.  I copy/pasted the IGNORE file and everything works as planned ( although I still have those annying files and folders... oh well....

That looks like filesystem corruption.

Run scandisk to fix it. Check both the "Automatically fix filesystem errors" and "Scan for and attempt recovery of bad sectors" checkboxes.

Judging by the size of those files, a lot of the stuff you've put on there is now corrupted, so you will have to copy it back on again.

If this problem recurs, it's probably because of one of (in decreasing order of likeliness):
1. You're not "safely remove"-ing the iPod before unplugging it from your computer.
2. Your disk could be dying.
3. There's a bug in Rockbox causing it to corrupt your filesystem.

3. There's a bug in Rockbox causing it to corrupt your filesystem.

While it would be both foolish and arrogant of us to rule this last one out - I'd like to point out that people have been using Rockbox for a very long time now without this happening as a result of something Rockbox has done. The former two reasons are far more likely.

Indeed I don't think it very likely, but it's listed for completeness.  There's always the possibility of "phase of the moon" bugs that only happen to one person.

Can you add Tag errors, of the new files to the list of problems?

Did you mean list of potential causes?  If so, "bad" metadata wouldn't cause the appearance of strangely named files in the filesystem.
