here that explains how to set up a WPS file and outlines the various tags WPS code uses to display whatever information you may like.
Creating the background and any images you may wish to use to indicate things like the approximate battery level remaining or the volume, as well as whether various things like hold, shuffle, and repeat are on or off can be done with pretty much any digital-imaging software (ie. Photoshop or similar products, even MS Paint if you're good with it, or the GIMP for Linux buffs). Use your imagination, or try to use something that fits in with the theme you want to make.
