Rockbox H140 won't start...
« on: February 13, 2008, 05:01:49 AM »
Hi. It's been a while since I last was here so my H140 was running an old version of Rockbox. Decided recently to do a fresh update so used the format feature in iRivers firmware to delete everything.

I then d/l the current build of the 120/140 rockbox, extracted it to the root folder, but the player always wants to boot the iRiver system when it powers up.

I've checked over and over again. All the extracted files are located in .rockbox (hidden rockbox) and no other folder/s. I even resurrected an old Windows PC, installed 7-Zip (as it said in one of the other forum messages to someone having trouble), and used that to extract to root but it still won't play ball...

Did the boot-loader get an update in the interim period and I need to update that as well?

At the moment I'm completely and utterly flummoxed by all of this. Any suggestions would be welcome.

Rob.

Just to add to the above. Am I right in thinking that there used to be another file outside of the .rockbox folder, way back when Rockbox was first being developed for the iRiver players?

rockbox.iriver used to live outside of .rockbox, but was moved into the .rockbox directory in the middle of last year some time for all targets.

I thought I remembered a file that was outside of the folder! Okay, the file's been moved and success, Rockbox boots and the balls back in play! Many thanks GodEater!

I'd personally update your bootloader so you don't have to do this again...

I was going to leave it, mainly because now that it works I don't normally bother updating Rockbox. Well not for a while anyways, as can be seen by this thread!

However having had second thoughts I decided I may as well update the boot-loader, and take the opportunity to update the iRiver firmware at the same time.

So having put that file back in .rockbox, and updated the iRiver fw to 1.66, it's worked out nicely.

Thanks once again for your help.

I am having the same issue.  I used the automatic installation, everything installed correctly.  Shut down the player, restarted it and it still is using the iRiver firmware.  And, no, the rockbox.iriver file is inside .rockbox.

I'm kinda stuck at what to do.  Any additional info you need, I'll respond.  Hopefully someone can solve this issue.

Thanks!!

Did you update the flash using the flash update function in the original firmware?

Where would this be located? I must not have.

Have you read the installation chapter of the Rockbox Manual?  It explains in detail how to do this.

I read the installation section.  I see talk of flash/flashing but nothing about how to go about doing this.  Unless I'm looking in the wrong area??

Here are the instructions from the iriver manual for the H100 series regarding how to flash a firmware update:

Quote
How to UPGRADE?
1. Download the latest firmware upgrade file from
www.iriveramerica.com.
2. Extract the file and save it to the ROOT folder of the H140.
3. Connect the AC adapter to the H140.
(Caution: Only upgrade the firmware on the H140 with the AC adapter connected.)
4. Press in and hold the NAVI button to open the H140 menu.
5. Press the NAVI button once to select the General menu.
6. Select the Firmware Upgrade and press the NAVI/MENU button to activate
the firmware upgrade.
7. Click the NAVI/MENU button after selecting YES
on the Alert window.
8. Check whether your LCD window shows “Firmware
Upgrading...”
9. Do not turn the player off or disconnect the player from the
AC Adapter until the Firmware Upgrading is done. When the
power goes off automatically, the upgrade is done. After turning
the player on, confirm the Firmware Upgraded operating.

You can download the iriver manual here:

http://www.iriver.com/support/down_ok.asp?idx=2420

To install the Rockbox bootloader, you have to patch the iriver firmware file that you download in step 1 above.  The Rockbox Manual explains how to do that.  After patching the file, put the patched file on the root of your player and proceed from step 3 above.

The firmware patcher is here. Download this, and follow the instructions Febs gave above.

Afterwards, Rockbox should be all set to go.

The firmware patcher is here.

Nowadays we have Rockbox Utility for doing the patching work. The old method will still work, but I assume there won't be any updates to fwpatcher anymore (though there hasn't been an update to the bootloaders for quite a while too).
