FAT32 not listed as a format option?
« on: October 15, 2007, 02:12:57 AM »
I want to reformat my gigabeat f60 because I have been getting the persistent "No HDD" error after trying to update the build.

I connect the gb to my computer via the usb cable and the computer and the gb both 'see' each other, but when I go to format the gb, the only option is 'NTFS' format....

I have tried using two computers, both PCs, one running windows vista and one windows xp..

suggestions/advice/point-in-the-right-direction-s much appreciated!!

Bex

Windows XP and later refuse to format a disk bigger than 32GB as FAT - for no good reason apart from to encourage you to use NTFS.

So you'll need a third-party formatting tool.  One free option is fat32format:

Ok, I have fiddled around with the FAT32 formatter you suggested, unfortunately I don't know what I'm doing and I can't figure it out based on the instructions given or by googling the bits I don't understand..

Can anyone dumb it down for me?! Specifically:

1. Do I need to create a new partition as per instructions, even though its an external drive and disk mgmt says 'Healthy (primary partition)?

2. "Now download a copy of fat32format. Extract the single EXE file to somewhere suitable, like C:\. Click Start->Run and enter cmd. CD to the where you extracted the fat32format exe, e.g. by typing CD /D c:\ "
What does 'enter cmd. CD" mean?

3. Finally, does "Now you're almost done. Type this: fat32format f:" mean I should type fat32format x: into Run? Or if I'm doing this correctly will I be in command prompt or something??

Any help greatly appreciated!!

Pay attention to the full stop:

"Click Start->Run and enter cmd."

This means type "cmd" and then press enter.  THEN use the "cd" command to change directories.

Ok, that makes sense. Thank you!

Suspect I will need more hand-holding but will see how far I can get now...

Try this program: http://files.extremeoverclocking.com/file.php?f=197 It's as simple as the windows formatting tool.

I got further with the 'Ridgecrop' formatting tool, but still kept running into problems.
The one Mad Cow suggested was great, so I'm all fat32 formatted now.

Thanks heaps everyone!!
